Default 60 Mile Florida Downwind Race In March!!!

VooDoo Kiteboarding

2013 Central Florida Open Ocean DownWinder

VooDoo Kiteboarding, along with Cancer Care Centers and Foundation of Melbourne will have the 4th annual "Central Florida Open Ocean DownWinder" which will be held on the “Very First WINDY Weekend of March”, with back up dates on the rest of the month, thru April. The Event/Race will cover 60 miles of the East Coast of Florida, starting at Cocoa Beach and ending at Vero Beach, or vise versa, depending on the wind direction.

Brand New this year will be a 30 mile downwinder for those who think that they can not make it the whole 60 miles. The half-way point for that event/race will be at a place called Sebastian Beach Inn Restaurant (S.B.I.) 7035 S. Highway A1A, Melbourne Beach, 321-728-4311. S.B.I. is half-way from both directions, coming down from the north, or coming up from the south. There will be NO prices for this part of the Event/Race. It is just designed to have FUN on a shorter distance of the Event/Race...

There will be a 72, 48, 36 hour "heads-up notice" prior to the Event/Race per the Wind. If the Event/Race starts at Cocoa Beach, it will start at a place called "Cherri Down City Park" (corner of Washington and Ridgewood Ave, Cape Canaveral), which is where we started the priviest years. If the Event/Race starts from the Vero Beach end, then it will start at South Beach Access at the end of East Causeway Blvd (17th Street Bridge).

This is an EVENT/RACE, but it will not be that hard to figure out "How to Do it". Just go very FAST along the Shoreline, and avoid the two piers and one inlet. You must stay offshore at least 100 YARDS to be SAFE of the Life Guard Stations… PLEASE… There are only 9 on the 60 mile downwinder, so be COOL, and stay out of the "SWIM ZONE"...

On Event/Race Day, there will be a Skipper's Meeting 30 minutes before the Start, MANDATORY.. There will be a $30.00 Race Fee for All Kiteboarders. We will collect that the day of the Event/Race, prior to the Skipper's Meeting. We do have Clearance to Cross in Front of Patrick Air Force Base again this Year, but it will be a very small window, so try and get across that "Air Space" as soon as possible.

VooDoo Kiteboarding wants everyone to know, that if you do this Event/Race, You will be responsible for anything that happens to You and Your gear. This event is for FUN Only, and if you are not up to 60 miles in Open Ocean Conditions, then you should at least try the 30 mile part of the event.

We are looking for Help for this event, if you just want to be part of history, and don't think you can make the DownWinder….Contact Us if you want to Help, We can use you...

The Event/Race will have a....

1st Place for Men...(60 mile downwinder)
1st Place for Women..(60 mile downwinder)
1st Place for Master's..45 years and older, (60 mile downwinder)
1st Place for 20 year old or younger..(60 mile downwinder)

Schedule for the Event/Race...

9:15 til 10:00 Reservation
10:00 til 10:30 Mandatory Skipper's Meeting
10:30 til 11:00 Getting Ready for the Race
11:00 Race is ON, if the Wind is Good...(15mph plus)

After the Event/Race is over, there will be a Trophy presentation at S.B.I. 7035 S. Highway A1A, Melbourne Beach, 321-728-4311..So enjoy the Food and Spirits until the "Rescue Team" has finished the Race..(A.J.Morgan, and anyone else that wants to just come with me and enjoy the ride, instead of Racing, but I will be moving as fast as possible also..)

P.S. We are looking for any Sponsor’s to donate any “Swag” to the Event/Race, (i.e. t-shirts, hoodies, kite gear, board bags, magazines, etc) to be presented to the Riders at the Trophy Presentation…

Fastest Champion from years ago is Sean Reyngoudt, who did it in 2 hours and 18 minutes...

After the Event/Race is over for the day, then there will be a presentation at S.B.I. for the Winners....(S.B.I. is the half-way mark for the Event/Race)

This event is back again and given the time range A.J. is allowing for it, we should have some good wind and waves for it. Should be epic, hope to see you there!

Just a reminder to everyone...There is only two more weekends left in Feb., so hopefully when March rolls around, We can do the downwinder the first weekend of the month..If not, there will still be 8 more weekends to have the Event/Race...So be sure to tell all your friends to come and be part of this Event/Race...We are still needing volunteer's to help at the "finish line" this year, so be sure to contact the Us/A.J. if you can help...321-795-7626

Well February's last weekend is coming up...SO...get ready for March...The following weekend could be the 1st weekend for the Event/Race (E/R), if Mother Nature gives Us the wind and direction...So be sure to get all your gear "checked out" before heading 60 miles downwind...We will have a "Safety Team" following the Racers, but it will not be a boat or jet ski type device....A.J. will be the "Safety Team Mgr", asking for volunteers to help out with this job, but if there is no one interested, he will be the Only One doing it, and the info on how it will work, will be talked about in the Skipper's meeting...Again, this E/R is for Fun, Go Fast, and make sure that Everyone gets home safely...

Safety Tip for the E/R...Bring a "waterproof" cell phone container...

When the Riders sign up for the E/R, they will be given a "raffle ticket", one per racer....

Raffle tickets will be sold for $5.00 each....Outback Steak House is giving away Gift Cards for food and drinks...(2) @ $50.00 a piece...

We are keeping our eyes on the wind forecast for this coming weekend...If it does not blow with the right wind speed or direction, then of course We are going to "roll it over" til the next weekend, and so forth, until the Event/Race is done for 2013...So keep your eye on the weather and this post, for that "72 hour notice"...

Looks like this coming weekend is NOT going to be a weekend of great winds coming out of the North, East or South...So the Race is going to be rolled over til next weekend, 9th and 10th of March....Keep looking for more updates as they come....

Well the weather is somewhat looking good for a possible 60 mile ocean downwinder this weekend, either Saturday or Sunday...

So as of Now, this is the 72 hour notice for the Race ...

I'm hoping it blows harder than the forecast is showing...Saturday is my 51st birthday, and what a "gift" it would be from Mother Nature to give Us more wind than is forecasted and to have a ton of kiteboarders Racing down the beach....NE 15 to 20 on Saturday, clear and cool...Sunday is showing more wind, but a slight chance of rain later on in the afternoon, by the forecast readings..

So please facebook, text or email if you are coming...Thanks..

Well it is official...We are going to put the Race on HOLD til the next windy weekend...Mother Nature did not bring the wind speed for this weekend, but the direction was perfect, NNE to East, but the wind speed went from 18 plus to 14 less...

So keep watching for updates on ikitesurf, FKA and Facebook...
