Default Anybody up for a downwinder 87th street to Crandon

Hey guys,

Looks like a dream day tomorrow for a downwinder, I live on Miami Beach, and don't want to make the trip alone!

Anyone in?

J

Would love to but I am stuck in the office two counties to the north. How about it Miami riders, who's in?

Jur why not get more guys in your part of the beach on here? It would sure help filling out impromptu downwinders, pass word around about events, gear for sale, wanted and more.

I remember from the time we raced from Ft. Lauderdale to Crandon, you need to make well to seaward, deceptively far, before crossing Governors Cut from the north. The north jetty is over 2000 ft. long! You might start heading southeast to the east towards the end of the jetty, if you can see it, from around 10 th. Street. Check the tide, if it is anywhere near the higher currents halfway between low going to high tide, give the inlet and other cuts a WIDE leeway. It's a good idea to give them lots of distance as a matter of course anyway. You don't not want to get vacuumed into a cut, particularly a busy one. Also, if the current is flooding out you may want to avoid the area around the inlet due to the substantial steep waves that may setup against a strong easterly wind. Once you are past the Cut you can make a straight shot SSW to Crandon staying well off Virginia Key. Alternatively you can move a bit closer to Virginia on a SW tact and then veer south covering up Crandon until you get a bit closer. Would be best to have company along, hope someone steps up.

Hope the wind honks through you entire week off!

I would be in for the downwinder.

I live in Miami Beach as well on 50th and collins. I have the day off and was debating wether to kite out back behind my building or to head over to crandon/matheson for a flatter session. I guess the downwinder would cover both those options, plus Iv' always wanted to try kiting across the cut to Crandon.

Anyway, its already past midnight, I'll check the posts first thing in the morning but then ill probably head out to Crandon around 8:30-9:00. If it doesn;t work out tomorrow I'm dfinately down to do downwinders ojn Miami Beach. I ususally just do them alone from 87th street to 50th street.

Have fun out there - those of us that got lucky enough to be off work this year.

How did it go guys? The wind looked pretty good early. Come quiting time today though, latent wind snobbery slipped in at my end. It seemed to light or perhaps several days of accumulated soreness sent me elsewhere.
