It was trickier to handle down your way with the causeways, extensive seawalls and private development to walk back from downwind runs. It was a lot easier up here with linear stretches of unguarded beaches to work from. I can recall seeing guys stay upwind in 1999 in Maui on two line kites and wondering, how do they do that?! I think the greatest problems were insufficient wind and edging. You used to fly F ones too Raul. What was the most wind you ever took one of the old ATK foils in? Those kites could be severely punishing in major gusts and lulls.

One time I deliberately did a downwinder the last time I flew a XXXL Ram kite on handles. I was about to sell it. The walk back from that carrying a long directional board was 6 1/2 miles! Try that with a windsurfer.

Probably in Hood River , Gorge on a 5m ATK gusting 15-40knots ragdolled me
all the way across the sandspit battered bruised

I got rid of that kite immediately afterwards......

Just came across some new, old clips of Cory in action on all sorts of kite gear, pioneering kitesurfing.

and some rough black and white imagery out of France in 1980 at the following link:

Fun times, good vibes...
We have this crazy bar with the REEL at a local kiteshop hanging on the wall.
You could defend a country with this thing

Without a quick release or leash, you just hung on until you were forced to let it go. That is if you could still unhook it. I bet aluminum "bike" control bar puppy could take the head off a rhino in free flight.
