OT - SURF'S UP At The Beju

Just checked out "Surf's Up" on a no wind, no wave, should have gone diving day. So, it's a kids movie but for water types who knows where you might find something different. It is a fairly strange animated feature, sort of "Happy Feet" goes BIG wave surfing in Fiji or something. Instead of grinning all american boys ala Brown flick, you have a bunch of penguins. Big hardassed tattooed penguins, small peppy penguins, we're even talking artesinal cannibal penguins from the "yum-yum" clan. There's even a hedgehog "Don King" wanna be (with the voice of James Woods?), and there's a chicken. A stoner surfing chicken dude from big wave surfing in Lake Michigan? It isn't all fantasy, well almost, there's voice overs by celebrity surfers Kelly Slater, Rob Machado and Sal Masekela as TV newspenguins reported live from the big wave event. Slater even lets on that some of the characters are inspired by surfers out there.

Not to be left out, Jeff Bridges (Lloyd's boy) from the big screen plays a dead bird surfing icon, come back to life sort of. The screen art is intriguing, an animated takeoff from the fantastic, massive waterfalls and rock forms. We're talking 100 to 300 ft. massive swells for the surfer penguins to drop into. So they surf on slabs of ice in Antarctica and shaped chunks of rotten log in the topics.

It may have been inspired by this 1961 Don Brown classic among other surf flims.
