Default RACE UPDATE and other info..

The 2007 TampaBay KiteMasters PreParty rocked Bongos last Saturday with over 100 riders and friends showing up. Many of the kitesurfers enjoyed great winds and tore it up in front of the tavern. Others practiced their racing skills while doing long downwinders. Thanks to BEST, Slingshot, Flexifoil, and Cabrinha Kitesurfing for doing demos and allowing the locals to savor your new gear. Thanks
to John and Steve at WaterSports West for all their help and also to all the other sponsors for making this a great event. Please visit the "Sponsor" page on our website to see and visit the long list of sponsors this year.

Rick Iossi was on hand taking photos of all the late night action. Check out some of his pics at: http://www.fksa.org/viewtopic.php?t=2976 Rick was also lucky enough to draw #1 starting position for the race.

Props also go out to the crew at GAMEZON. Next time you see Mark Townsend be sure to thank him for the awesome jerseys he provided this year. There are extra jerseys available. Contact Mark via email at: oceanrnr@ix.netcom.com to get your hands on one.

The STARTING LINEUP is now complete.

Please visit http://www.tampabaykitemasters.com/riders.htm for your race day position.

Some of you missed the preparty and the race details we covered at the race so I am going to overview them again here.

1. PRE-RACE. We are still waiting for a strong NW front. It will not be this coming weekend. You will receive an email 72 hours before saying we MAY go. At 36 hours before race you will receive another email CONFIRMING if we go or not. A final email will be sent the evening before the race telling you what time to arrive at the starting line ( Honeymoon Island )

2. DAY OF RACE. Be sure to arrive a minimum of 90 minutes before starting time. Riders who have not picked up their JERSEYS or RACE CARDS should arrive earlier. Extra jerseys will be on hand for sale. Riders who already have their race cards -- BRING THEM. There are no extras!

All riders must check in to the REGISTRATION DESK upon arriving.

Riders should have someone drive them to the start so their vehicle can be driven to the finish. The drive from Honeymoon to Bongos is approximately 55 minutes so drivers should beat the competitors to the finish.

Entry to Honeymoon Island is $5 per carload. When you arrive, turn left at the second road and follow to the southernmost parking lot (ask guard if unsure)

Proceed to beach and set up in your starting position. #1 is furthest south -- #90 is furthest north. Beach will have posts every 20 riders. Each rider gets about 20 feet.

There will be a riders meeting 30 minutes before race start!

NO FREERIDING BEFORE RACE (save your energy- you'll need it) Riders may ride several tacks to make sure that their gear is appropriate. Water MUST be clear of all kiters 30 minutes before start.

3. HORN SEQUENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10 minutes before race

-- 1 short blast from air horn - Carefully launch KITES INTO AIR

5 minutes before race

-- 2 short blasts from air horn - ALL LEISURE RIDERS PLEASE TAKE 10-15 STEPS BACK FROM SHORE. Competing riders please condense toward the south allowing each rider comfortable
spacing.

RACE START -- 1 LONG air horn blast

Then all remaining riders CAREFULLY proceed to water.

4. FINISH LINE

There will be banners flying at the finish line. Look for these as soon as you pass the last channel and see the round hotel (Holiday Inn)

When approaching the finish line look for 2 orange buoys near shore. THIS IS THE FINISH LINE. Riders must pass thru the two buoys to be considered complete.

PROCEED DIRECTLY TO SHORE!!!! A finish line attendant will come to you and collect your card while another catches your kite. The attendant who
takes your card will write your time and placement.

If you do not come to shore immediately then your time and placement WILL NOT BE RECORDED. There are no exceptions to this rule. It is our goal to make sure EVERY riders knows their final placement and exactly how long it took.

NOTE: If a large pack comes in at once -- please land your kite first then form a line for the attendant
to register you.

SAFETY and THINGS TO CONSIDER

This is going to be a difficult race in extreme open water conditions. Things can, and will,
go wrong. PLEASE BE PREPARED.

There is one requirement:

RIDERS MUST WEAR A KITE LEASH!! NO LEASH = DISQUALIFIED

There will be many spectators
on the beach and their safety is a priority

Following is a list of recommendations for riders.

- wear booties. It’s a long walk and the trolley requires shoes

- use a camelback to stay hydrated

- wear a helmet. "I know u r good... but u r dead if u r unconscious"

- take a cell phone in a waterproof bag

- wear a floatation device. Yes, we have rip tides here

- have fun... but know your limits. Exhaustion is your worst enemy

- check your gear thoroughly. Fill kite bladders before the race and let sit overnight. If it deflates... fix or replace it.

- do not race with untested gear or gear you are not comfortable on.

- stay far offshore when approaching channels (there are 4). The tides scream thru these and can cause you to be severely underpowered or overpowered. Allow yourself extra room to react.

ALL RIDERS WHO DO NOT COMPLETE THE RACE MUST GO TO THE FINISH LINE (BONGOS) AND INFORM THE STAFF THEY ARE OK. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE US, AND THE COAST GUARD, LOOK FOR YOU ALL NIGHT.

I guess that's enough for now. More info will be coming as we approach the race. Please visit the website (www.tampabaykitemasters.com) for all the new updates. Chris Moore is working hard to get everything posted quickly.

Thanks to everyone involved with what will undoubtedly be the...

LARGEST KITE RACE EVER HELD!!!!

2007 TampaBay KiteMasters Race - UPDATE
www.TampaBayKiteMasters.com

We are still waiting for some NW wind. It doesn’t appear that it is going to come this weekend (Nov 11th, 12th). Beginning Monday, November 13th
we will be going on ANY day of the week that we get solid northwest or west-northwest winds over 18 knots.

We are still in need of more race day volunteers. Please contact me at:
tampabaykiterace@yahoo.com if you, or someone you know, can lend a hand helping with setup, take-down, start and finish line.
