TAMPA BAY KITEMASTERS ANNOUNCE THIRD ANNUAL KITE SURFING RACE, “BACK TO THE BAY”

ST PETERSBURG, FL (January 2008) After an overwhelming response from the previous races held in the Tampa Bay Area, kiteboarders are headed back to the Bay for the third annual kite surfing race. Kite Surfing has immensely grown in popularity in the Tampa Bay area and is home to world class athletes, including professional kiteboarder, Billy Parker who won last year’s race. Last year’s rider registration of over 90 kiters and over $12000.00 in cash and prizes proved to be one of the largest kitesurfing events in the US. Last year’s race started at Honeymoon Island and followed the Coast of Pinellas County all the way to St. Pete Beach, a distance of over 25 miles! As equipment and skills continue to evolve, the sport remains thrilling for the riders as they soar up to 30 feet high for distances of up to 100 feet. This year they will be experiencing speeds of up to 35 mph and traveling along some of the most scenic spots in the Tampa Bay. Crowds of spectators have begun to form at local riding launches such as Fort Desoto. The breathtaking views and anticipation of what’s to come keeps everyone on the edge of their seat.

This year’s race is titled “Back to the Bay” and will challenge participants in a downwind race from the Gandy Bridge to the Skyway Bridge, a distance over 20 miles. The race is expected to be held mid-February 2008 and another huge turn out of riders from across the country is expected. The race is of course weather/wind dependent so an exact date/time will not be announced in advance. Riders and media will receive a 48 hour notice. This year will better allow spectators and media to catch more of the action because riders will pass by points of interest such as Vinoy Park, the St. Pete Pier and Lassing Park. It will be exciting for both audience and riders alike. Sponsors for the event are already lining up for this exciting annual event.

To be added as a sponsor for the race, please contact Chris Moore at 727.507.1013 or Chris@TBKM.org or Amber Platowski 813-454-9005 or amp1504@wildmail.com or Amber@TBKM.org
