The start of the race will follow a similar format to sailing races.
There will be a white board located at the captains meeting with a list of these procedures for you to review.
A combination of colored flags and signals will the only devices used to start the race.

First off, there will be three marks that will create a line that should not be crossed until the race begins. Those three marks will include a large buoy on the beach at waters edge, a buoy near the designated swim area, and another buoy equally distanced offshore. These three marks will define "a starting line". This line will be perpendicular to the beach.

At the riders meeting the only time that will be given is the estimated 10 minute countdown to start the sequence that will begin the race. This is so you can plan accordingly.

10 minutes before race to begin
*10 short blast of air horn will be sounded
*no flags at this point, just a signal that if you really want to race, kites should be in the air.

5 minutes before race to begin
*A large white Cabrinha flag will be displayed at the line on waters edge
*5 blasts of the air horn will be sounded. They will be longer in length with equal time between blast. 2 seconds on, 2 seconds off

2 minutes before race to begin
*A large solid green flag will be displayed at the line on waters edge
*2 blast will be sounded. They will be longer in length with equal time between blast. 2 seconds on, 2 seconds off

1 minute before race to begin
*A large solid yellow flag will be displayed at the line on waters edge
*1 blast will be sounded. This will be 2 seconds in length

Start of race
*A large solid RED flag will be displayed at the line on waters edge
*1 long blast will be sounded. This will be a continuos blast of 10 seconds or more.

The one minute rule in sailing will apply. A race official on a ski will be monitoring the line. Any rider over the line after the yellow has been raised or before the red has been raised will be pointed out and ask to round either outside buoy before continuing on. You of course can race, but you just cost yourself some time.

The Finish Line

The finish line will be in front of the Undertow Beach Bar in St. Pete. This is just south of the last pass, "Blind's Pass" on St. Pete Beach.
There will be two flags and two buoys at waters edge. Riders must pass through those buoys, get control of the kite, a check in with a race official at waters edge. Your time and place will be recorded there.
Proceed up onto the beach away from the water and land your kite. No riders are permitted to ride within one hour of your finish time or you will be disqualified.
That's it.......go to the bar, and get some grub and drink and wait for the awards ceremony to begin.

Parking Info

There is metered parking at Sand Key Park and it is strictly enforced. There are change machines there so bring cash or plenty of change. Park closes at dark.

There is limited parking at The Undertow, however, there is parking across the street.

Trolley Info/Rescue

PSTA has a trolley system running north and south along Gulf Blvd which covers the entire length of the race. Bring $1.75 in quarters just in case you have a breakdown and need to catch the trolley. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ON THE TROLLEY WITHOUT SOMETHING ON YOUR FEET! Booties, flip flops, even socks will do. Bare feet won't.

With the wind direction, if you experience any problems out there or simply want to stop, the wind will blow you to shore where you can pack up and catch a trolley.

Be courteous to the driver and other riders
-Have exact change, coins preferably, wet dollar bills are not a cool thing for the machine on the bus.
-Pack down as small as possible and look organized
-Keep your gear contained and under control on the bus so it does not swing around and cause concern for other passengers/the driver.
-DO NOT board the bus dripping water all over the place - this will be an issue. Either wait until you are dry and relatively clean...or bring a camping towel in a plastic bag to dry off a bit.
-You must have something on your feet. Socks, Flip Flops, or water shoe/bootie
-Clean as much sand from your gear as possible
-Trolley cost is $1.75 and must be paid in quarters

A rescue ski will be on hand to make sure everyone either completes the race, or gets to shore safely. The driver is CPR/FirstAid and a certified instructor with 5+ years of experience. Your in good hands.

Any kiter that can't finish with their kite, must physically get to the finish via trolley or car to check in and be accounted for. With that said, any rider deciding not to race after registration must check in with race official to notify their intent "not to race". No refund will be given as this is a charity event.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns and hope you can make this awesome event.

Thanks and pray for wind!!
