Default Wind Farms ... In Florida???

uh, don't you need pretty strong consistent wind for a viable wind turbine power generation farm? I've seen them on the ABC Islands, Lake Arenal, Northshore of Maui, South Point, Hawaii, etc.. That is places with fairly strong, consistent winds. Given our frustration over the summer and at times throughout the rest of the year and the fact that we commonly PAY to travel to such wind destinations, makes you wonder. It also adds some credence to the theory that Federal inducements may be more motivating than actual profitable power generation. Anyway, over to Adam Locke's message:

Subject: FW: Favor to ask of all my friends and family

Dear friends and family,

I am calling in all favors! FPL has targeted South Hutchinson Island and our public beaches for an industrial wind turbine plant!!!! This appears to be the first time they are proposing to put one of these plants, which are comprised of a number of 410 foot turbines, in a populated area. In other areas where they have built these things, the noise, strobe lights and shadow flickers (the blades cast moving shadow flickers as they turn) have been so bad that people have had to abandon their homes and move away, and all of the wildlife have moved away as well. The proposed plant is directly upwind of our neighborhood where it will create a huge impact on our family and lives.

Worst of all, industrial wind is the biggest boondoggle of all time. Because wind is such an intermittent and variable source, it is not a viable source of energy for the grid. (It is great for homes and boats where you can adjust demand to suit supply, but is only 1% efficient on an industrial scale. They do not and cannot replace their conventional power counterparts that must be constructed to carry base load on the grid and therefore offer no benefit in reducing global warming.) These plants are being driven by massive federal tax subsidies and “green tags” (an invention of Enron), which were passed because of intense industry lobbying with the help of a well-intentioned but uninformed public. They have minimal benefit and huge negative impacts. FPL said at a meeting on Friday that they intend to put them on every beach and every bit of green space they can in Florida and elsewhere. They don’t mention that they made $2.2 billion in profits and paid ZERO federal income tax because of their wind farm subsidies. These wind plants make people feel that they are being “green” but divert resources and attention from more viable sources.

There is something very simple that each of you, my dear friends and family, can do to help us.

Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Save_St_Lucie/ and click on Join Now. If you don’t have a yahoo ID you will have to register first, it is a very simple process and will only take 1 minute.

We set up the site to educate people about the true facts about industrial wind. You don’t need to agree with us, but your joining this site will help us to send a powerful message that people care that “Going Green” is done in the right way, with appropriate siting of plants and efficient and effective technologies. Once people learn all the facts (and not just rely upon a “presumption of greenness”) support for industrial wind evaporates.

Thank you all for your support. We really need all the help we can get right now to stop this folly here and elsewhere. Industrial wind may be coming to your town next!!!

Julie & Adam Locke
