Default CABRINHA RACE SERIES: One Man/One Woman

CABRINHA RACE SERIES: One man/One Women

The 7th night of the 2012 Cabrinha Race Series resulted in a lite turnout with only 23 racers, a night of notables missing; Heineken, Lake and Adam Koch were off in Europe capturing the entire podium again, Andrew Koch was also in Europe winning the Melges Worlds, while Geoff Headington was on race committee and Adam Vance was just missing in action (lives in Seattle), and a one man, one women show.

While the racers were preparing on the beach the wind was up and down and the fog was moving in and out with no clear indication if the wind would build or die off a bit; 9s or 11s? Just as the racers were ready to leave the beach, the wind popped up, Anita was averaging 23 (19-27) and the question was answered….9s.

One Man, one Women Show: After three races, Chip Wasson earned three bullets (1,1,1), all in a decisive manner. He won the first race by 19 seconds, the second by 45, and the third by 17second. Erika Heineken had her best night ever and one that any racer, man or women, would enjoy having. She finished the night 3rd overall with a 5,3,3!
Overall for the night it was Chip (111), Morris (2,5,4), Erika (5,3,3), Stefaans (4,6,4), and Besse (3,7,5)

The fog and dull light made it difficult to see who was who on the course, but here goes. In the first race the whole fleet was a bit late to the start with a handful starting on port. I was Chip at the windward mark. At the committee boat Chip built a 20 second lead with three others about even behind him. Chip held the 20 second lead thru the gate and tacked early to come inside and eventually finishing on port. Chip finished 19 seconds ahead of William Morris, 37 seconds ahead of Seth Besse, and 45 seconds ahead of Steffaans and Erika.

The wind dropped a bit for the second race averaging 21 at Anita (16-27). Although starboard wa favored, the port starter all made it thru. The starboard starters went way inside near the beach a caught a bit of a lull. Chip was again first at the windward mark by 15 seconds. At the boat he built his lead to 27 seconds over Nils and Erika. Wasson continued to build his lead thru the gate and finished 45 seconds ahead of Nils and 47 seconds ahead of Erika, followed by Morris and Besse.

Third race saw the wind at Anita averaging 22 (16-27). More racers attempted port but it cost them some ground as they had to yield to the starboard starters. At the 12windward mark it was, yep, Chip by 8 seconds over Ty Reed. Ty had kite issues; think he broke a line in first race and missed the second as well. Chip had a 5 second lead at the boart over Ty and 25 seconds over Erika. At the gate, cChip went inside and Ty outside. On the race to the finish, Ty fell three different times providing Chip some breathing room. At the finish, it was chip by 17 seconds over Ty and 24 seconds over Erika.

Notables: Brown again got some great starts and appears competitive till about the boat on the downwind leg…then seems to falter?
Erika looked very fast and made very few mistakes. She will be tough to beat at next weeks North American Championship.
William Morris has shown great improvement over 2012 and is becoming more consistent race to race.
Nils is looking pretty good on the comeback trail with a 6th overall (7,2,7)
After his second place finish in the last weeks PKRA, Bryan Lake maintains his first place ranking on the World Tour
After 4 races in Germany this week, Johnny is holding down second with Lake third and Adam 4th…still time for things to change.
The 7/12 Cabrinha Race Series will be the last warm up before the 2012 USA National next week.
