It is not a bad thing, and would be nice if they offered it as an option. I'd opt for the best possible kite at the best price they can offer and I can assume the risk of damage. If a repair is needed due to a problem with materials or workmanship the company should cover it even if it is beyond their warranty period. I don't think they should charge you up front for repairs that may be due to a defect. That is just me though. I'm a cheap bastard and it galls me what I pay for health insurance that is essentially me betting Aetna $500/month that I will get sick and them betting I won't.

Only if it is whole life and only if you pay your premiums. I would suggest a waiver of premium rider, just in case you lose you job and are unable to pay, you won't lose coverage!

One more thing,

If i was buying a kite for the first time and just learning how to ride, I would love to have a warranty like that. I never did anything major to my kite, but it got ALOT of use and had about 8 repairs the first year.

I think this warranty is a good thing, it means eclipse is standing behind their product, if you put one hole in it the first year and they repair it, maybe the next time you put a hole in it outside the warranty you will send it back to them for repair...

Honestly, I think it's great. In my case though, I haven't had to repair any of my last 7 kites in the past 3 years. Basically I'd have thrown away $420 if I had to pay an extra $60 per kite, regardless of size.

But, that said, any warranty is great these days because so few companies have one.. thats ridiculous considering the markup on this stuff.

Was the kite you shredded at the skyway covered under the retroactive part of the warranty policy?

Man you guys are hard on your kites.

I recently (6 months ago) went in to see Keith at Advanced Sails to have him repair a kite.
I take all my kites there when they need repair. I hadn't seen him since 2001 when my 11.8 Wipi Airblast blew up the first day I pumped it up. I take all my injured kites to Keith.

So in a nutshell, I have had one kite repair in 7 years.
I would have spent approximately 1,200 dollars on kite insurance if I paid 60 bucks more for each kite I bought for the insurance over the years.
I don't know. I am not convinced everyone wants to have to pay for insurance. It should maybe be an option.

I have spent over 30 grand on car/truck insurance over the last 25 years and have never been in an accident (not even a fender bender) or filed a claim, not even when my rear window got busted.
Funny, they keep charging me .... every month, just the same. If given the choice from day one, car insurance would be the LAST thing I would agree to participate in to "protect myself".

Nah, it was over a year old anyway. Eclipse took good care of me anyway though...no worries, the customer service is top notch!!!

Great for light winds. I've done something similar with my kayak, but did not have to ditch my fishing rod (an expensive ride). The shark tired out after 1/2 hour and I cut the line close to the sharks mouth. For "Shark Boarding/Surfing" I would have used a cheap waterski rope. However, someone is probably going to try this here and get bitten. Plus the animal rights activists will complain about abusing the sharks.
