Default FAU or USF (Tampa)

Hey guys,

I already got accepted to both schools so im pretty stocked on that. But im kinda 50-50 on which one i want to go to. I know usf (tampa) is kinda far from the beach but it has a good academic reputatioon. Fau has my more favorable major but it dosnt have the repuation USf has. So any info or sugestions would be much appreciated.

FAU major- ocean enginnering
USFmajor- Chemical engineering

Default Student @ USF St. Pete

I am a student at USF St. Pete right now. I run the kite club here at school. It only takes about 5 min to get to a nice spot and about 15 to the gulf beaches. I don't think they offer your major in St. Pete but you should look into it. USF Tampa is about a 45 minute drive to the gulf beaches but they have a launch called Cyprus about 30 minutes away on the bay. One thing to consider is that you will be able to kite on ANY wind direction here. Thats within 45 minutes of where you will be in school. Hope this helps.

Hi there Airush,

Congrats on getting into school. I have a Master's in Environmental Engineering from UF and took a bunch of science classes at USF along the way.
First off, I would pursue Chemical Engineering (if you have equal interest in both subjects). Much higher chance of getting a good job, imo. Broader field to start and other advantages. That's coming from a guy that focused on marine stuff with my degree, btw.
I mainly hopped on to stress the idea that some fields have better ROIs than others, so take that into strong consideration.

In terms of schools, I am sure both are good. I can assure you however, USF has an excellent engineering program. No worries there.

Good luck with school. Engineering will surely try to kick your ass, but you won't let it (unless you kite all the time and lose focus.... DON'T do that )

If you are at USF, I may see you around.

Scott (on Bob's account)

A coons age ago, I started Engineering and Biology at USF for a couple of years and finished in Biology and Ocean Engineering at FAU. It was a while back and a lot has changed, then again some things have changed little I suspect.

OE and ChE are highly divergent fields on the surface. What attracts you to each field if I may ask? What (and where) would you like to do upon graduation, go for an MS or into the work force? These are fairly important questions, and lots may not have great answers, early on. Still, maybe you do so it is worth asking.

I grew up on Ft. Lauderdale beach and on the reefs offshore. Being obsessed with reef diving and the SE environment was a poor mix with USF when I was there. Was fairly miserable but hung in for two years. Had a favorable sea change upon returning to Ft. Lauderdale and FAU. Wind sports are less dependent on bottom communities and viz by far. Kiting can be pursued in each venue to varying degrees throughout the year.

USF is a much larger university than FAU with about 46 k vs. 26 k students. Then again, OE is fairly unique and notably linked to FAU going back to the mid '60's. If your heart is set upon OE, then FAU is perhaps the best choice in state, even in the SE. For ChE, you've got me but it wouldn't surprise me if USF had a good standing in that discipline. You should know that even though they call it OE, in fact it can be more of a generalist engineering ciriculum. There is a broad spread of civil, structural, materials, acoustics, corrosion, electrical and other areas of engineering that can be blended in. The ocean part at times is secondary, dealing largely with traditional terrestrial aspects of fundamental engineering doctrine. When I went through, it was a demanding program and provided an excellent basis for work in many areas of engineering, not just ocean aspects. You should also know that finding work in the field of OE in Florida can be challenging, strange but true. Lots of us went on land in time to practice in other areas of engineering. I've interviewed and hired both OE's and ChE's over the years for various reasons and applicant strengths. In the end in large measure, it depends, back to you.

Default Go owls!!

FAU all day!!! im a part of FAU's Kite club, you should come and share the stoke! i grew up in st. pete, living 10 blocks from the USF campus, but i wanted a change, and FAU has been pretty sick on the watersports side, great kiting conditions, along with ski rixen cable park just ten minutes away from the boca campus. FAU is a hidden water sports gem.
