Default A GOOD IDEA!

Quote:
Dave P. just mentioned a great idea that he had for kiteboarding in an email. The inspiration for the idea is the Higgens Langley Award For Swift Water Rescue. http://higginslangley.org/hlaward.html.

His idea was to have an annual Kiteboarding award say in three catagories like:

Equipment
Instruction
Rescue

and would be awarded at Surf Expo.

Dave further went on to say that the the Higgens Langley Award selection criteria is based on preparation and skill not necessarily heroism.

This would put a positive spin on our sport, recognize and reward people that go out of their way for others. I have heard of several candidates this year already.

Some sponsorship would be appropriate along with a judging committee.

What do you think about this?
Getting back to Dave's idea, what should be accomplished by this? Some ideas include:

- Giving deserving people public thanks and recognition for important actions beyond the norm. Ideally, the more public the better which would necessitate the awards having fairly broad credibility and acceptance in the sport in time.

- Public recognition can have benefits that extend to the sport as exemplified by the easing of riding restricitions in NW Florida described by KiteGlider. Casting the sport in general in a positive light in terms that the public can relate to may help if access pressure builds in some areas.

- Giving some material reward would be good if it could be worked out. For example, I understand that Shannon Best is sending a replacement board to Mark Barnett on the quiet for his rescue of the tow-in surfers in Oz. Saying thanks is important, backing it up with something of tangible value is even better. This could come in time perhaps. In doing this it is important to avoid putting things in the light of a crass promotion which would lessen the value of the recognition to the recipients.

- There would need to be some judging criteria to make things fair. One approach would include multiple judges from different geographic areas and occupations.

- Aside from rescues, what other catagories should there be? Exceptional innovation in gear, training/media and leadership? Is this too broad?

The MAIN thing about this is to DO IT. Productive discussion is a good thing, "paralysis by analysis" or endless, mindless criticism or hallucinating about subversive plots is not.

What about nominations for judges? It seems that having a fair number may decrease the influence of bias, so how many, 10, 15, 20? TNominations could be made privately if desired via PM or email. Ideally the nominations should include the candidates name, location, occupation and interest in kiteboarding. To evaluate gear, training/media at least some of the judges should have experience in those areas but not necessarily all.

While this is going on, think about some deserving award candidates. This could be done annually so there could be some time to pull things together.

Let's hear your constructive ideas on this.
