Default KB Restrictions at Ft DeSoto

The latest word according to the park rangers at Ft Desoto is that NO kiteboarding is to take place at the North Beach rec area.
The restricted area begins at the first parking lot and extends to Bunces Pass.
The beach south of the North Beach area aka "big beach" is open to kiteboarding as is the rest of the park.
Several local kiteboarders were recently approached by the rangers, given warnings and told that next time they would recieve some sort of citation.
Hopefully this situation will not worsen or lead to further restrictions within the park.
Pass the word and please respect the requests of the rangers as this may prevent any further restrictions.

I am sorry to hear about that. I have yet to make it over there for good west winds to checkout North Beach. Looks like I waited too long. Thanks for the heads up.

A Sat. view of Ft. Desoto park appears below, showing the various areas and the new restricted area to the northwest at North Beach:

A closeup oblique view of the restricted area, North Beach, looking from SE to NW appears below. This was a sheltered calm water launch unlike the balance of the areas of the park currently still open to kiteboarding from appearences.

I just found a VR image of the former riding area at North Beach. It looks like it was a nice flat water spot inside the sand bars.

A view of the area where kiteboarding is apparently still permitted appears below:

in addition to other non-bathing areas to the east and northeast.

More info on area kiteboarding appears at: http://www.tbksa.org/

There are now reports that the North Beach is again open to kiteboarding and pole-boarding, and that the East Beach is going to face a possible ban.

Park officials are being contacted and there is an effort underway to schedule a meeting to discuss the situation. At the very least we'll get the "word" and can end the speculation.
Our hope is that by listening to the concerns of the park officials that a compromise or agreement can be reached to keep access open while addressing their concerns.

I am not going to speculate on the how and why of the rumors, so when there is a definitive word then I'll update the post.

Here is the definitive word, as of today anyhow.

The park supervisor stated that kiteboarding is allowed throughout the park, the exception is the lagoon at North Beach which is off limits as it is a swimming area.

The #1 concern to the park are bystanders getting hurt. The ranger stated that if anything threatens our activity, it would be an accident involving a bystander.

The ranger was provided with contact information and urged to give us a heads up should any concerns arise in the future.
