Arrow First Ever Collegiate Competition MARCH 19TH-MARCH 25 - KEY WEST

This is the first ever collegiate kiteboarding competition, the purpose of this event is to set a presedence for a collegiate kiteboarding league, as well as to open the sport of kitesurfing to college students throughout the country.
COMPETITION INFORMATION
The event will begin next Monday, March 19th, at 10:00 A.M. Registration will be at the green tent with cabrinha flags on the East side of Smathers Beach. There are three seperate events throughout the week and riders with current college id's can enter free. There will be two days open for each aspect of the event, in case of shortage of wind. Should the whole week be windy we'll do each event on its first alloted day and use the second to host demos, expression sessions, and kite parties.
Monday the 19th and Tuesday the 20th, will be open for the freestyle comp. the event will either be hosted at smathers beach in front of the registration tent, or out on the grass flats, with the kitehouse house boat. Wind forecasts will be posted updated regularly prior to the event stating the location.
Wednesday the 21st and Thursday the 22nd will be open for a kickers and sliders comp, this will be held in the same way depending on wind, stay tuned.
Friday the 23rd and Saturday the 24th will be the days for the boarder-x. This will be run by Neil Hutchinson and X-Rated Kiteboarding, the boarder-x will be capped at 32 and will preferably be finished on friday, with the awards ceremony that night. College riders will have full priority in all events but if there are open spots, we will except last minute registrations. Top college rider will win a Slingshot Machine thanks to Neil Hutchinson and Slingshot Kiteboarding, all other prizes will be alloted in normal order after that. If both friday and saturday are perfectly windy, plan on completing the Collegiate event friday and a General Entry Boarder-X, entry fee's will be put up for prizes as well as leftover swag. This will be updated as well throughout the week when we know what will happen with the wind.

Default Whatta Day

Today was a blast, we had a solid 20 knts once 2 o'clock came around. Mike hall was on the PA the whole day while the crew from photoboat.com buzzed around on the course in two specially rigged zodiacs taking documenting all the fun.

There were tons of spring breakers loungin on the party island all day long, cheering the kiters down wind in the zone. Schools at the event included eckerd college and fsu, while there were loads of students at the event from colleges/ universities in georgia, michigan, texas, and north carolina.

Tomorow there will be a slider event following the same schedule as today, registration at 9:30, riders meeting at 10:30 and first heat at 11:00 if the wind doesnt kick in till 2:00 like today then we will play it by ear.

Wednesday, will be a collegiate kiteboarding promo party all day at smathers beach untill 2:00, we will be demoing Nobile and Underground boards and having a free kite demo. By 3:00 PM everyone will head over to willie-t's on Duval St. From 3:00 untill close Triton Kiteboarding will be hosting a massive kite party, headlined by Bermuda's #1 reggae band, The Homegrown Band. There will be the latest kitesurfing videos such as the brand new snow kite dvd Entropy, playing all over the big screen tvs throughout the bar. There will be drink specials all day offered by Beleza Pura Fine Brazilian spirits, local drink prices for all kiters.

Thursday will be the same exact schedule with an all day collegiate kite demo, we will be introducing the sport to all college spring breakers on the beaches with hopes of starting other clubs throughout the country. The Homegrown Band will start at Willie T's at 11:00 and play till close. Drink Specials are the same and different event sponsors will be advertised throughout the night, in very entertaining fashions.

Friday, Neil Hutchinson of X-Rated Kiteboarding. will be coming into town to wrap up the collegiate event with a boarder-x. The event will be capped at 32 riders. This event will include both collegiate and general riders. First priority going to college riders. Friday night The Homegrown Band will be playing their final show and we will be hosting an awards ceremony for all the college riders.

Saturday, We will hold another boarder-x wind permitting, this will be explained further within a day or two once the forecast is locked in, but this will be an open event.

Come out and enjoy the festivities, if you have questions stop by smathers beach across from the airport all week or contact mike hall at 727 667 5718. We will release some photos of all the fun by wednesday. Email sextonmg@eckerd.edu, or TritonKiteboarding@yahoo.com for info other info.

Just talked to Paul Menta, I understand the event is still going on today and tomorrow. Neil is warming up his water obstacles for kiters to bounce off of and over. I heard a rumor about one kiter contemplating a solo cruise from Miami to Key West, winds willing. I would love to do it myself but the prospect of a 70 mile + downwind run out of an overall 150 mile + session is not very appealing even in fairly calm water. Stay tuned ...
