Smile Two For Two

Yippeee!
Winter is finally over up here in Canada and the water doesn't have any ice on it. Kited Sunday and Monday in nice winds both days with Monday being a lot more gusty than Sunday.

Air temps have been above 50 deg F and water temperature is a balmy 37 deg F in Lake Ontario.

Congratulations! Aren't you in the mild Banana Belt up there anyway? Wow, 37 F, almost time for a shortie? You guys are core up there!

Oops. Lake temp is wrong! only 33 deg's. We usually get off pretty easy in the Toronto area now for snow but we had more than we usually do so everyone is itching to get out. However this is tempered by the realization how cold the water is and taking the appropriate precautions.

To west of us near Detroit and Lake St Clair is a lot milder. Lake St. Clair warms up the quickest - it is the shallowest of the great lakes. Shorties in the other lakes come out in late June early July.

Kiters aren't really hardcore up here when it comes to weather. The surfers are! They surf all winter through with 6/5/4 wetsuits and gloves. That's hardcore!

Thanks for the report, interesting stuff. Never thought about lake depth vs. water temperature warming as the year goes on. Does that make Superior one of the last to warm up, to what, 45 F?! Watch out for those late season cold fronts, some strong ones are still going through. One a while back slathered a good chunk of the Caribbean with some big surf.

Say, do you dive? I wanted to checkout the wrecks of the Hamilton and/or the Scourge off Port Dalhousie near St. Catherines for the longest time. The sound remarkably intact for wooden wrecks sunk almost 200 years ago. That is assuming Cousteau left anything standing after his dive saucer attack? http://www.hamilton-scourge.hamilton.ca/virtual.htm

No i don't dive. Only have Scuba dove once in Jamaica.

Yes Superior is the last to warm up.

We've had a great week up here. Some guys got out four times. Looking good for tomorrow too.
