Default Dunedin Causway Restrictions

Just thought I would share this as some may ride the causeway in the future.

If you have never been, it is a long strip of every kind of hazard in the book. Powerlines, trees, small launch area, cars, strong currents, boat traffic, dogs, roads, rocks, kids, channel markers and holes in the wind all over the place depending on wind direction.

With that being said it is highly recommended to ride the south side only as their are powerlines on the north side. Hopefully nuf said there.

On the south side, think of the causeway as three sections. East end is for small jetskis and boats (combustion), middle is for swimming, and the west end is for Hobie's, kayaks, windsurfers and any other power craft using non combustion. After many years of riding here, a police officer recently told us not to use the middle or swimming section to set up, launch, and ride. There are no posted signs really, except the typical swim area bouys. It seems obvious, but like at the beach would just get in the water and get out of the swim area. Anyways, an $88 fine could result from launching near the swim area. We have been using the west end since the talk with the cop. It is not as ideal regarding room, but can work. Another alternate location for launch is dog beach on Honeymoon. Tons of room there.

It is one of the places where you can get into alot of trouble and our worse kiting accident to date occurred there recently. Excercise caution. There is alot of room to ride but it can feel like your in a pinball game. Anyone that has ridden there has a story to tell.
