It has almost been three years since the sinking of the Rapa Nui artificial reef project. An artificial reef was sunk, just not in the form anticipated unfortunately. Moai have been individually placed and anchored to the inverted barge hull, so the concept is being slowly resurrected. In the meantime there is a new fairly large hard bottom for growth to secure to where a sand bottom previously existed.
