I swim around pier 60, around the jetty on the south end and just about every place in between on clearwater beach everyday. I see sharks dolphins manatees stingrays snook sunken boats hot bikinis and tarpon that weigh more than I do. The fact is you're not on the menu. Like anything else in life, put yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time and you could have an issue. I feel much safer in the water than i do on my bicycle on the way to work every morning

Sharks north of Courtney Campbell
A few years ago, I went along for a ride with a friend in his helicopter. We were cruising just north of the CC on the Pinellas side and saw some big moving shadows. We took the helicopter (a Loach - like the one from Magnum PI) down for a closer look. The shadows were sharks and the largest one was about the length of the chopper. The loach measures about 15 feet in length! We were about 10 feet off the water and didn't even scare it away.

I actually caught a shark that size out at EB this spring...while kiting!!! There was a bobber floating around on the flat, so I rode over and picked it up. Surprise! Shark! about 2ft or less and exhausted, but as soon as I tried to hold him up and show off my catch he bit thru the leader and swam away very happy to be free. Maybe I hooked us up with some good kiter/shark karma.
Pray to the wind gods for thursday and friday folks |
