East beach (not really a beach, more like a large grass flat just inside a sand bar) is definitely the place for beginners. There are always a few beginners out there, so you won't feel out of place bringing some more.
Yes, not a bad idea to wear booties due to some sharp things like pen shells living in the grass bed.

The Gulf beaches would probably be a mistake due to the beaches being very crowded and many people in the water.
