with bow or flat kites you should stay hooked in depowerd ,( sorry to disagree)
when I'm walking with the kite or just standing there I never leave it at 12 because a gust can make ya kite back wind and drop.
(and then mabe launch dead down wind and that hurts)
the safest place to leave it is 11 or 1.
if ya walking with it hold it low in the wind window like 3 or 9 that way you can drop it straight into the water and there is less wind window to make mistakes with.
only bring the kite to 12 when your about to put your board on.
don't be shy ask for help if you need it.
