Excellent points Eric. You can't ride the break off guarded beaches in the southeast in most cases. That puts you inside 150 yards of shore. You have to go to non-guarded areas for that. There are plenty of such areas too, just be courteous of others when you get there to avoid complaints off the public beach. If I drift downwind in lightening conditions and can't make it back to the designated launch area I usually will go to the far side of the guarded, out of bounds area. It means walking or getting a lift but so what? It sure beats encouraging a ban through laziness. We're the watermen, we need to anticipate and control our circumstances to the best of our abilities.
