not sure if it will happen this weekend, but I'd recommend staying away from "heats" in your course racing. The problem is that it doesn't allow much riding time for those that are not progressing though rounds.

Are you starting races from a boat? If so, I'd stat the race on a log reach (1/4 mile), and then go into the jibes. This would allow for a fleet start which is exciting for riders as well as spectators. It also allow racers to spread out a bit before the first mark. I'd suggest trying to do 4-5 12 minute races with 1 throw-out after 4 races are completed. This way everyone rides.

if you are starting from the beach, set the first mark broad so that lower riders have to keep it tight and higher riders will have a longer distance to the first mark, but will ride at a faster angle. you can do a simple triangle course with a start on the beach and a finish between the first broad mark and a staff on the beach.
