Kite causes outage

All 29,000 Keys Energy Services customers from Key West north to the Seven Mile Bridge lost power for about 17 minutes Friday when a kite surfer's sail came loose and struck a transmission line near Mile Marker 40.

The incident occurred at 11:47 a.m. The sail kite untangled itself from the line on its own, and utility crews were able to restore power to most customers by 12:04 p.m. All customers were restored by 12:10 p.m.

Officials from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office reported the kite surfer was not injured during the incident.

KEY WEST"

Marathon, a small puff up at 11:47 am.

The powerlines are about 25 ft. from the water's edge and rise up about 100 ft.. Bad place to let a kite loose. Also, there are likely strong tidal currents through the cuts bordering the small islands. Not a great location to ride overall, better ones nearby.
