Excellent points Stevil and thanks! I particularly like your point about routinely securing the close off valves on One-Pump kites. This is easily ignored until your kite goes inconveniently flat well offshore. It is good to make this a habit, thanks!
Over the years with forced repetition I've learned how to self-rescue with C kites fairly effectively (using it as a sail). I've tried it a few times with more rigid flat kites and have to confess I am still trying to figure out how to sail in as effectively. Practice is key. Have extra time, lighter wind than ideal for riding, why not practice self-rescue. There is a good chance that someday you will be very glad that you took the time.
You are right about self-rescue in offshore winds and your approach sounds interesting. Anything you can do to reduce canopy drag is important. Wind drag may be sufficient to reduce your progress substantially and drop you even deeper into trouble.
