Air Density

An interesting observation backed by a lucky find. The cold front that rolled through last week made for some great kiting. I was riding my 11M and the winds were averaging 20 - 23 steady for a few hours. The power was perfect. The next day after the cold front had moved on the winds were still averaging 20 - 23 later in the afternoon but I noticed something different. The power I experienced the day before was much more significant than the day after even though I was kiting the same wind speeds.

Fast forward to today where I randomly ran across a thread of kiters discussing air density in Australia. Long story short if you kite 20 kt wind that is contained within dense air you will experience more power than kiting 20 kt wind in less dense air. This explains why I felt so much more power during the wind in the cold front versus the following day when the heat and humidity had returned creating less air density.

Pretty interesting.

Hot wind sucks. Cold wind rocks!
