had the same problem. the best way is to dip the knot in some water for a bit then tap it with a hammer and flaten it out. then with a pen or little screwdriver start picken. it takes a bit of time trust me but it works.

typically it just take a while.. use the water / light hammer tap method and you should be fine.. just dont use any sharp object to try to wedge it open.. you'll tear the fibers.

should it be hot water, cold water, warm water or does it not matter?

hot water but not boiling water. I had to do one today without tools by getting it wet and biting it with my teeth until it loosened up... it worked. A hammer and a wine opener are the best tools.
