Belize Kiting Conditions?

A few of us are heading to belize on Feb 20 for a week. We keep seeing conflicting wind report conditions and are not sure what kites to bring (have to pack as light as possible). Does anybody have any experience kiting in Belize? Does anybody recommend a reliable wind report source? I looked around the Forum and only found the Bahamian section which I thought would be close enough. Thanks in advance. Bryan

depends on where you're gonna be at.

windy prolly but tough some launches off the islands cause small beaches.

contact chris at ambergis caye he runs the watersports down there

I understand they have steady wind, likely trades for much of the year. I asked about it recently when I passed through. Looks like lots of calm water venues too. Not nuking wind but in the mid teen to low 20 mph range on average I would guess. Would think the odd front might increase or even kill the normal winds. I would follow BigR's advice and get some local info. Will you be staying on the mainland and/or going out to the cays along the barrier reef? The wind likely improves further offshore on the cays. They seem to have iron shores on the windward or eastern faces. They are low lying and so may not generate much wind shadow and may have sand beaches along the north and south extremities along the western sides.

Was there for a day on a cruise over new years. Unfortunately didn't get to kite, but the wind was blasting all day. Belize City is one shanty town. As soon as you step out of the cruise terminal, things get a bit sketchy. Maybe looks are deceiving, and it's truly not bad. But I wouldn't feel easy lugging my kite gear around town.

It is, run , don't walk to the port to get a ride out to one of the cays as fast as possible

It is windy there whenever the fronts roll thru in the winter/spring

during summer its more a trade wind type deal

watch out for the coral reefs right beneath the surface surrounding all the islands.
they are loaded with sea urchins and have a tendency of sneaking up on you!

like has been said, get in touch with chris @ sailsport belize

notice the whitewater in the background, thats the reef
