Bahamas Wind?

Ill be in the bahamas may 26th through june 4th, not in any perticuar spot, I was just wondering if it is worth bringing kite gear on the boat, going for sportfishing but I was just wondering if there is any spot that gets decent winds or if its evenwirth bringing kite gear this time if year and what the conditions are like???

ricki 05-08-2008 10:42 AM

In the Western Bahamas the odds are not good for useable wind in that timeframe , then again, some years surprise us. Wind has been less frequent than usual so far this spring however. I will be in the Abacos just before that time and am not planning on taking kiting gear from current indications.

You may or may not have more useable trade winds further down the islands in the Central and Southeastern Bahamas in early summer. It would help to find out where you will be ranging in the Bahamas. If you can manage to bring gear for just in case, that would be a good option to pursue.

What do you think AJ and the folks in the Out Islands?

If you dive, I would be sure to bring stuff along to have at that. Clear warm water is usually in good supply throughout the Bahamas.

Good to know. Say, what weather forecast and realtime wind sites do you use in the area of the Exuma's? How accurate are they?

Thanks

I use two site for georgetown, http://www.ikitesurf.com/windandwher...orecast+Graphs
and
http://windfinder.com/forecast/georgetown
I personally like windfinder better, because it's a bit more flexibly in terms of settings, but they are both very accurate for the next two or three days, maybe changing as few knots here or there on occasion.

the Ikitesurf one is owned but exumakitesurfing, I'm not sure if everyone will be able to access it. if you can't acces the ikitesurf one, try going direct from their homepage. www.exumakitesurfing.com

:D :p

Thanks for the links and commentary! So, for last Saturday the wind archive says you had ESE winds averaging 18 to 20 mph gusting to about 22 to 23 mph. Would you say that is pretty accurate? Are there any wind directions when the accuracy falls off?

If you are an ikitesurf member you can access this station. btw, ikitesurf has added a stupid number of stations, about 4 x more in south Florida. I think these may only be accessible to members.

thanks for the info. probibly bring my kites just in case but at least there should be some good fishing if not kiting.

Just came across another weather page, this time for the area of Abaco. There are some nice large scale color radar links in this one.

http://www.abacomapbahamas.com/weather.php

There is also a good interactive satellite map of the Abacos at:
http://www.abacomapbahamas.com/gmaps/abaco-gmap.htm

More sites at:
http://abacomessageboard.com/AbacoWeather.html

Of course there is Barometer Bob, a standby in the Abacos with lots of content on his site including realtime winds:
http://www.barometerbob.com/

Still more wx from Abaco:
http://abacotoday.com/weather/index.shtml

Have no clue how accurate this site is, but it deals with some out of the way places in the Bahamas:

May get some in Hope Town a few days around Sunday, I hope. You should get it right after on New Providence AJ. Late season present!

captadamr 05-25-2008 04:55 PM

Hope your packing your gear, its going to be a good few days and maybe the 31st weeekend will be windy....wierd

ricki 05-26-2008 06:39 AM

27 gusting to 35 mph Hope Town, Abaco, yee ha! Indicas here I come.

ricki 05-26-2008 09:17 PM

The area of the hub of the Abacos has gone OFF since last night. Waves, good wind, all the necessary food groups for great sessions.

How is it in New Providence and the Exumas?

captadamr 05-27-2008 10:18 PM

Not too shabby over here, been on the North beaches since Sunday, winds from 16-20kts, I wont complain especially since its MAY!

Sam 05-30-2008 08:40 PM

Just learned of yet another site, possibly with useful weather info not only in the Bahamas but also for getting there.

Wind and pressure
http://www.passageweather.com/index....da/mappage.htm

On the Florida Current/Gulfstream
http://www.passageweather.com/index....a/mappage2.htm

Be sure to animate the charts to help with spotting trends.

Just came across something on the NDBC site. Includes stations worldwide, this view deals with our part of the Basin. It shows view stations within the Bahamas but has some nice offshore stations to the north, west and south to help identify inbound trends.

Checking windguru and windfinder, wind stays in the 15 knots range direction e/se, what's verry good.
Is it right?? or I shoud forget these places since season is over.

I suggested getting in touch with http://www.exumakitesurfing.com/
but apparently they are out of there at that time of year.

Looking at the consistent easterly direction, it looks like they do, weaker ones anyway. The graphs are in mph not knots. It isn't as bad as I thought it would be, looks rideable rigged for light conditions (big board, good sized kite). Each year varies in these strange weather times were in however. A tropical system could increase or completely mess up the winds you see below. You're in prime time for tropical activity in late July and August. Contrary to common belief hurricanes and tropical storms can really mess up kiting (kiters too) at times.

Great news, Chris with Bimini Kiteboarding tells me there is a wind station on South Bimini accessible online at: http://southbiminihomeowners.com/weather/

I understand the wind sensor is mounted on a roof with no nearby obstructions so the data should be fairly reliable. Chris said they are working on adding a couple of livecams too, that will be great!

Bimini Kiteboarding 02-10-2011 02:32 PM

Hey Rick

Yes the wind station has no near by obstructions so it is very accurate in every wind direction.

I will keep you posted when the Live webcams go online. There will be 2 webcams, one that shows the ocean state and one that will show the sky to see when fronts are moving in for pilots that are flying to Bimini.

Stay tuned

Just came across some information on AUTEC or the Fresh Creek area on Andros at XWaters. The seem to have about 5 mph more wind over there than in SE Florida at times.

http://xwaters.com/locations/autec/

They also have information on an area I haven't been to before on Andros, Stafford Creek:

ricki 04-11-2012 01:10 PM

There is a site maintained by the Bahamas Meteo Service. Not sure how accurate it is. Seems there are no advanced marine forecasts, only public out three days.
