Daryl with Ocean Extreme sports sent this photo along. It was taken of a space shuttle launch last year on the ocean opposite his shop in St. Augustine, FL. |
Wave riding

possibly best kite wave riding movie I've seen so far [starts after blah-blah at 5:00] [Check out wipeouts at the very end, 20:55] |
Chris Kjos takes us via seaplane to Joulters Cay off the north end of Andros. |
Chris is at it again among the sand flats of Andros with a stop at Bimini in his Lake Amphibian seaplane. Eric came along to catch some great takeoff, buzz by and landing video. They even chase a stingray with the seaplane, on uh under the water off Bimini. |
How often have you had this happen? Good sized shark but in Florida a pretty common occurrence in some areas. Your course intersects with a slower moving shark, it panics and hauls butt out of there. The guy was in Cuba which may be of more interest for folks that live nearby but have never kited there. |
I would crap myself if that happened, seriously bear off downwind and get the hell out of there!!!!
Suppose at least you are moving faster than it so able to get out of there 2011 Mystic Warrior 3 harness |
It varies by the species but sharks can move pretty fast and for sustained periods. Faster than we can go in some cases. Bearing off and moving away makes sense however. That is what I've done in the past. Beached and assessed conditions, jumping bait, feeding seabirds, jumping sharks, etc.. Sometimes it may be an isolated incident at others there may be some activity in your area.

I bet the poor thing (sharky) got scared way more :)

This kind of picture is almost a cliche for Tampa Bay, but here you go anyways:

Great shot, thanks for posting it! Reminds me of images from Crandon Park with ships passing out for the Port of Miami. Things is you have that dramatic bridge in the foreground.

Grazing on sea grass in OBX |
Wave-o-rama and all captured with a GoPro HD camera.
Nice job guys! And, if you miss December, cooler times (windier too), the same fellow put something together in homage of a white Christmas (in Oahu). Almost looks like Greg Noll riding in some of those wave shots. |
"Counterbalence 2010 Following the lives of two kiteboarders with unique styles and documenting their attitudes toward life. Patrick Rebstock a strapless kitesurfer searching for waves to ride with his friend Reed Brady a technical freestyler both hit the water" Hats off to the videographer and editor in creating new and interesting ways to present hand pass footage. That is a huge challenge all in itself. |
A big, long jump in stormy conditions. The kind of European squalls that have killed and maimed more than a few riders. They've had some right here in Holland too. See that one windsurfer do an emergency jibe to stay out of the lines? He blew that jump with lines stretched out in front of a bunch of sailers. What's wrong with being a jump hero and responsible? "We had a wonderfull day on the 3rd of september 2009 in Holland. Winds exceeding over more than 44 knots. Conditions: Sun, rain and thunder, and mostly Storm, storm, STORM! It was a perfect day with me and Ruben Len10 doing a Stormsjees 3 tour along the coast, which started out of the blue. First spot was Wijk aan Zee for a real hard trashing on Ruben, then off to Scheveningen to do some more. Also there was Eddy Lansink doing his thing to, and very well indeed! " Here's another clip showing one way to approximate jump height. Still no mention of risk to the other guys on the water posed by the jump. 64 ft., good height. I suspect there have been higher jumps but a big one all the same and with a happy ending but not for lack of trying. . |
A kiting "documentary" out of Lithuania. I think it was prepared as part of the degree requirements for the maker. It is an intriguing, well shot and edited clip. Not too sure about the name, "Get Trauma." Perhaps it has a different meaning in Lithuanian? A clip of Aaron Hadlow riding in an interesting setting. The videographer, challenged as always but the prospect of presenting endless handlepasses in an intriguing manner, succeeded! Some nice editing went into this one. |
Wahou, I missed this topic, awesome videos, thank you for sharing it!

Yes, the HD does provide unusual access to nice images at a great price! Quite a few more GoPro video clips many with the previous WIDE model underwater at: http://fksa.org/forumdisplay.php?f=92 (usually with a green arrow on the subject line).

Not getting enough kiting miles in? Join the club on the other hand jeremie eloy seems to be exploring a good chunk of the planet ala kite.
Bahamas Durban, SA and Mozambique in some nice waves Snowkiting in Iceland Wave riding in Oz Going off in Guincho Portugal |
I am amazed that board leash was used for the flat water condition (Bahamas). Both riders were quite skilled. I wondering:confused:
|
Hard to say why. Could be the meter was running on the expensive helicopter and videographer doing the fly overs and they were worried about board retrieval delays? They can have ripping tidal currents in some of the cuts over there, didn't notice any of those however. In distance races in waves some use them but it is best to avoid jumping, not so in this case. Also, it was a simple surfboard leash too, don't know if he used a weak link either. Anyone understand French, is this a trailer for a longer video?

By the way I really like what he does, he has a cool website (http://jeremieeloykiteboarding.com/) with many new articles in EN/FR, I spoke with him once and it seems very cool. I love watching kiteboarders waves-riding (unfortunately I don't have yet the level to do the same, but I hope it will change one day ^^), and he does a lot of very great waves videos IMO. Otherwise, I don't know if you already put this video of Mitu Monteiro (Fone) on this topic but I really like it: Manera in Cabo Verde |

The other guy with Jeremie is Nicolas Hulot, a french journalist very famous (not the new JJ Cousteau, but very famous in France ;) ) Regarding the leash, I think only the journalist has it? And it seems that they didn't have a lot of wind. |
Thank you for the details and link Anto! That's an interesting documentary project, exceptional videography too.

Red Bull puts together a nice big wave video on Robby. Great footage of him tearing it up windsurfing, kiting, standup and tow-in surfing in some of the nice waves off Maui's northern shore. Contains some of the most aggressive big wave standup footage I've seen. |
June wind in Florida? True story, caught some around midday yesterday. Some guys were out making the most of it. Didn't have a camera but was carrying the EVO cellphone.

As long as you were far enough offshore. . |

Not sure, maybe John Z (1962 Oahu) has them beat. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e1...e/DSC03608.jpg These reed raft fishermen off Peru may have gotten into it a couple thousand years before John though. They do standup at times to surf in. Lots more about standup and its origins back in the day and more recently at: http://fksa.org/showthread.php?p=7783#post7783 |
This is now my background on my evo, thanks Rick!

Am I the only one missing waves and wind :) ?..
|
Excellent video, thanks for putting it up! Love the Mr. Bill surf and whitewater simulations. Great stuff.
On a positive kiting note, it has been surprisingly breezing (not quite windy) in the SE mainland so far this summer. Been nuking at times in the Keys as well. Be of good heart, it will blow again ... sometime! |
Kinsley Wong takes someone up on a tandem paraglider flight over Shell Beach, CA. Nice cliff soaring conditions that day. A kiter comes into the picture. Kinsley provides a special perspective on the rider's session. Make sure you're sitting down, the scenery is so relaxing it might cause you to drift off.

anybody live in a flood zone :) ?
|
backwash surfin'...
|
The backwash clip is amazing! Wonder how many guys get bounced off one another? Looks like a blast.
|
Just a simple introduction to kiteboarding... well made though... you don't get tired watching it over and over again.
|
Those boards are crazy...so 80's!

look at the smack @4:37 ...damn... wake up buddy :)

Great stuff Russky, keep it coming!
