Hillsboro Light Session - GoPro Goes Flying!

Decided to mount a GoPro HD on the kite for the first time and do a sunset session yesterday. This is what came out of it.

You are welcome! What part of the earth are you on these days?

Nice video quality Rick. I mounted my standard GoPro camera to the center strut using the wrist camera case. This was one of my first trys at making a video. As you can see the quality is not the same as your HD camera. It could have been the software (MS Movie Maker) or the settings that I used to compile it.

Nice video Jake! That is what Sunset looks like without storms. Last time I was there some rain was inbound, looks like a good launch. You mounted the camera close to the center of the center strut? Can you pivot the camera at all in the wrist mount?

I mounted the camera on the center strut around 12" or so (just past the nozzle) from the leading edge. Unfortunately with the wrist mount you cannot swivel it along the direction of the strut. You can rotate it to point a one of the wing tips if you want. I had to use an extra Velcro strap on my 16m Xbow to mount it around the strut. I also tied a piece of nylon line from the camera to the kite as a safety leash in case the Velcro came loose.

I'm still experimenting with different mounts. I plan to put one on the bottom of my kayak to see what that would look like while paddling. Also, one on my SUP once I get comfortable riding some small waves (I'm still learning). On my next trip to Busch Gardens I plan to film some action on the coasters.

There sure is a lot to experiment with too. I have been shooting a number of these but still experiment a bit with placement each time. There should be an article in the next Kiteboarding Mag. about kiting and GoPros.
