Summer trips?

It is still a bit early I know but part of surviving a Florida summer, all that unrequited wind lust, can be a good wind destination trip.

Any folks have plans or ideas for trips to wind destinations this summer?

My family has a family reuinion in Cape Hatteras each year either two weeks or a week before the 4th of July. We have a HUGE family and each year we rent out 2 very large 3-story(plus the stilts) cabins to fit everyone. The family is growing so fast that my girlfriend and I won't even have a room but will have to catch some couch or floor!!! I guess those are the breaks when all of my younger cousins and sibling decide to get married and have kids before me but who is the one having all the fun and NOT changing diapers...???

Since this is my first year riding, I think it will be the best year to date!!! I can't wait, since I got my "widow maker" fixed (8M 2002 fuel courtesy of Chris Moore), I should be able to fly it up there and can't wait!!! The trip is going to be a blast!!!

I'm hoping to make it down to the keys again soon and maybe take a trip up to Georgia or Virginia Beach sometime soon...I'll let you guys know what I have going on!!!

Toby.. Glad to hear you got the widow maker fixed. I have a family reunion coming up in August. We will be staying in Isle of Palms in S.C.. I checked the area out through the wind archives and it appears the wind will be on the light side during my stay. :(

You're wrong Chris,

There are NO fronts come thru in summer there however in the middle of july or august they seem to get afternoon thermals somehow

Isle of palms ,SC is a
Beautiful place too, I was there in mid july and wind comes up at 4pm ish
I was on a 12m fully powered

My favorite vacation spot is hood river OR, going for 10 days in end july.
air temp 85, no humidity, water 70, wind 15-35, great town , everybody sails, what more can you ask???

Thanks Big R--

That brightened my day a little bit knowing that I will be on a beach for a week and I might be able to ride. :)

My dad lives in Milwaukie Oregon.. just a hop/skip from the Gorge. Heading over there in July for a week or so.

Never kited there.. cant wait!

My mom lives about 100 miles away.. but I may fly into Portland, drive down to my mom's house.. pick up her RV and find a place at the Gorge to camp/kite til I cant kite no more.

Toss in a bike in the back of the RV, Park the RV in back of the walmart and you can bike down to the sand spit everyday and kite without paying any rent!!

Maybe I'll see ya down there end of July! Take your 8-10m kites, thats all you'll need!

inferno 04-04-2006 12:54 PM

well i guess i cant go since all i have is a 21m, 16m, 14m

OOPS!!! Sorry to degrade the name you dubbed it  ...widow maker it is... 8)

As for getting a little off topic and talking about kites that are better in local winds, I got my tax check last night and went to pick up the 20.5 M Slingshot Machine that Al has been holding for me for about a month and a half or two months from his friend Mark!!! Got a great deal, $800 complete!!! The kite is also in GREAT shape! Thanks Mark and Al!!! :D  8)

glad you got a good low wind kite, the summer here you'll need it

toby wilson 04-04-2006 04:09 PM

Yeah, I'm pretty stoked! You are more than welcome to ride it sometime...

BigR 04-04-2006 05:24 PM

Thanks Toby, I've already got a 23m contra and a 16m CB which covers that range of light winds

welcome ( soon ) to the tampa light wind summers of big kites and boards  !

I got to sample the 20.5 machine and a Glide today in about 8-11 knots! I am 165 lbs. and I was Litt at times! I already have a 17.5, but the 3 extra meters made a huge difference.I was able to do small jumps and a few backrolls. Staying upwind was no problem at all. Now I am wanting to get one for myself, since I know that Toby will be on that thing all the time.

toby wilson 04-05-2006 12:12 AM

I am pretty excited about having that kite in my quiver...I was DREADING summer but now I can't wait for it because I'll get to fly that kite all the time and NOT be sitting on the beach when it's not blowing all that much... And yeah Steve, you're right, I'll be on that kite all the time but you are more than welcome to ride it anytime I'm not!!!

I would also like to thank Al Lindsey for holding the kite for me for about a month and a half or so. He probably could have found another buyer on a website or even on the forum who could come up with the cash immediately but showed how much of a great guy he is by waiting on me patiently to get the money to pay for the kite. Definitely cool. Thanks again Al.
