DW day after Xmas

Is anyone interested in a downwinder on Tuesday?
Might be good NW winds. Could be fun to have 10 (or 30) of us riding out there along the beach and riding the trolley system back. :)

BigR 12-23-2006 08:54 AM

where do you want to start?

Skyway Scott 12-23-2006 08:57 AM

Majority rules. Let's vote on it. Where do YOU want to start?
I like the idea of going about 12 miles, taking a break and doing it again.

Tuesday
Northwest winds 20 to 25 knots. Seas 4 to 6 feet. Bay and inland waters rough.

The south skyway should work on that direction too shouldn't it? Looking for a hopefully non crowded spot for me and wendy. Hope wind forecast holds and everyone has fun in the gulf!

JoshTaylor 12-23-2006 12:14 PM

i'd be down for that.. anywhere on the beach is fine with me.

toby wilson 12-23-2006 01:45 PM

I'm in...as long as we aren't doing the downwinder anywhere near Caladesi...

tomstock 12-23-2006 02:03 PM

I might be in!

Wolfie 12-23-2006 02:14 PM

I might be in as well depending on start time. I was first thinking about starting at Sand Key, but it is too far to walk to set up. Plus you have to pay. Where can we be close and not pay?

Big G 12-23-2006 05:42 PM

You can count me in...

Maryland kiter

Hey all, I'm visiting my 'rents in Lutz, brought my gear and ready to ride. Last year I kited by myself at Desoto and it was fun but I'd sure like to ride with some locals. In lieu of the kook tangled line thread , I should say I've been riding 4 years now and am very familiar with the "rules" of safe kiting.
Sun , Mon, and Tue are all good for me.

Sand Key is a REAL walk from the trolley into the park on the return (they drop you off at the park entrance)
A suggestion would be John's Pass to the Undertow.

I am open to any ideas myself.
Anyone know a spot to start at IRB where parking won't be limited?

Should be a good, but cold day.

JoshTaylor 12-23-2006 10:27 PM

Dean, good to see you on here.

i can back him up, i've seen a video he made, hes in it alot, he's a good rider, definitly not a kook.

Skyway Scott 12-23-2006 10:31 PM

Cool. Dean, just so you or anyone else knows we are extremely welcoming of riders of all levels here. That guy was intentionally jumping right into people though and had the skill to decide otherwise. It seemed more like extreme discourteousy to me than anything.
Doing it once or twice is just a mistake and we all do it occassionally. This guy was doing repeatedly (kook).

It'd be cool to have you and ten of us or so out there
Donna's gonna give it a shot, any other kiter gals? :p

spleeft 12-24-2006 08:07 AM

Thanks for the props Josh

Ya I'm looking forward to kiting with you'all! The camera will be rolling too!!
Monday looks like some killer south winds, anyone gonna be able to ride?

Big G 12-24-2006 09:04 AM

My truck is available to carry riders up to the start if someone would like to leave a return vehicle. That way we can still set up at Sand Key and not deal with the walk back into the park. I can hold 5 riders with gear and maybe 1 more if you dont mind holding your gear.

I'd like to start at Sand Key to get in a longer d-winder.

toby wilson 12-24-2006 11:34 AM

Welcome Dean!!! Family is out of town for the holdidays so I am looking forward to riding all day Christmas day so you'll definitely have company.

Skyway Scott 12-24-2006 11:38 AM

It sounds like the way to go is to meet at the North side of John's Pass. There is alot of parking there and Bayflite is going to have some demo gear available.
JP is a reasonable place to meet anyway for a downwinder. This way we can try some new gear and then ride. We will try to leave the beach around 1pm or so and maybe do a second one if anyone wants to. :)

Some people are talking about racing. That sounds like it could be fun.
Anyone that wants to show up bring 1.50 for the trolley and wear booties (the trolleys won't let you on without "shoes")

spleeft 12-26-2006 07:29 AM

ready to rock!!

Are you all still goin' to Johns pass this morning?

toby wilson 12-26-2006 07:45 AM

941-284-0477. Call me, I think Paul and I are doing a downwinder if possible this morning. I have 2 work at 6pm so I have 2 go now, can't wait til 2 to go with everyone else...

Skyway Scott 12-26-2006 07:57 AM

I am not sure the game plan. I was hoping that Mike or Bryan would post on here to confirm. It looks like it might not clear up for awhile. Hopefully the wind will fill in stronger when it does.

If it is W or WNW, downwinders wouldn't make as much sense as NW or N would.

Big G 12-26-2006 08:29 AM

On-site....9:22 A.M

Lots of rain, darker clouds appear to be moving W-NW but not very fast. WIND-not bad and picking up.

More to come....

UPDATE

Good News..Sky much brighter here at JP-south. Wind is blowing very good and now seems to be more NNW now. Surf is waist hi.I'm planning on setting up and riding.

D-winder should be good and I hope demo is on.

Skyway Scott 12-26-2006 08:51 AM

Wow. Thanks Gary!! That's what we need. All the sensors are reading SSW from 2pm, yesterday.

Nice to have a real wind report:cool:

Big G 12-26-2006 08:57 AM

Toby and Paul r on the way. Going to do short diwinder to Bongos. Then returning by car for demos and afternoon d-winder. First ride should be around 11:00 this morning

tomstock 12-26-2006 09:40 AM

argh ok I need to meet up

tomstock 12-26-2006 04:05 PM

NBFD was awesome! Nice waves, and the 12m waroo jumps to the moon!

My leg is better, foot still numb but riding wasn't a problem... I guess my luck jumped and stuck to Colin who sprained his ankle 3 seconds after launching his kite while walking to the water! Bummer :(

Sorry Colin, ya missed it. I have your kite.
