Have you seen this thing

Anybody see this before. Bored at work, cruising ebay. It def looks sturdier than a dog stake. I thought the idea of using two, one for the CL and one for a leash attached to the flagging line was smart.

In theary a great idea for sure. However, some beach umbrellas have this same corkscrew add=on. I for one have had some difficulty getting it secured in the sand if even in the sand at all.

looks pretty kinky. Oh, wait, you use that for kiting??? sorry, wrong forum;)

LSUkiter 01-31-2008 06:14 PM

i wondered how secure it would really be in soft sand

Did you mean to post this on SA.org?? :)

Its sometimes the hard sand. With all the dredging they do around here, I have had trouble just getting the damn thing in. Call me weak.

Dog stake works really good though... just make sure you don't stub your toe on it OUCH

Kite anchor

For about $7, a 4lb fluke anchor (Danforth style), with a short chunk of chain and a short piece of nylon line can be set and will hold in virtually any ground in this area short of poured concrete. Cheap, reliable and versatile. B

I know some folks that use anchors....and I don't know if I am sold on that idea. I have heard them come loose, I have seen them come loose. Imagine a kite flying through the air with an anchor attached to it with two sharp spikes to boot.

I like to use a secure object or nothing at all. Just me. For example, on IRB we have these signs posted into the sand. I wrap a leash around the post, and attach chicken loop to leash, set kite, go back to loop and launch. Same for landing. Today at the Clearwater sailing center, I used a hitch to self land.

On that note, I really don't like self landing kites in high winds unless I have this technique available.

You have to find out what works for you and keep asking questions about an idea you have.
