DAY I - CKA Delray Event in Photos!

The WIND CAME UP! For about four hours recorded at 14 to 16 kts. sideshore before it clocked SW. Amazing and lucky for the guys that showed up and with kites. A few shots from the day follow. A good time was had by all with more to come tomorrow, after the party tonight of course.

A nice turnout of kiters and specators at this first ever Delray kiting event

They had a first at this one, kiter-wave runner races. Matt, creator of the CKA is showing little concern for the waverunner tossing off a trick.

Joe Ruscito passes inverted (thanks Stacey!)

They had a heat of kite assisted wind sprints both on land and in the water. Seems silly but what do I know?

The crowd gets into the riding

Will passes one too

Thinking the wind might be light, they setup a kiter catapult over by the Red Bull tent. This lady just arrives at the far end of her flight, a perfect touch down!

Alex, like Rodney Dangerfield is back to college, shhh, it's a secret. Wonder if Alex knows?!

This unnamed rider (help me out guys) jumps a sportsfisherman taking the baits as he goes

Big thanks to Delray Ocean Rescue for all their help in making the event a reality!

Matt seems happy, must be all that unforecast wind

Maria Herrera from the Sunsentinel was covering the action both before and during the event. She's written a number of articles about kiteboarding including her personal intro to body dragging, (on land? we'll hook you up with an instructor next time!) HERE and event coverage HERE.

Will pops one

The next competition consisted of boarding boats underway. The team heads out to checkout the cat.

Lia of Best Kiteboarding and Neil of Tiki Beach Watersports/Slingshot Kiteboarding work hard both in front and behind the scenes to bring the event off. Thanks folks for all the hard work!

Kiting is coeducational as this lady rides up to prove

Best had a strong turnout including Shannon on right, Ian, Gavin and Stacey

Matt floats along, nice color coordination!

Matt and Demian reel one in using the Grinch. This gadget came to global attention last week when a wake dude ripped across the flooded plain of St. Marks Square in Venice, more at the bottom of the page HERE

just amazing, the time of year and no wetsuits in the photos. You guys are hard core or you are in paradise.

Thanks thebestkite! The first day the wind was out of the south and warmer before the approach of the weak cold front. The second day out of the north and in the 60's as the front moved over. Despite that lots of folks opted to ride in just baggies although there was neoprene in use as well the second day. It seems cooler this year, with several mornings in the low 50's even some in the high 40's in recent times. Usually don't have much of that until January through February. Still, it heats up later in the day as a rule. If I'm going to ride all day, I usually opt for a full suit in strong, cooler cold fronts. As you can see, there are still warmer days. The Florida Current changing into the Gulfstream a bit to the north delivers all this warmer air, warmer than our latitude dictates. Thanks for that!

Forgot to mention, there was NO wind in the forecast for this event. Winds on the first day were supposed to be 5 to 10 kts. side offshore and 10 to 15 kts. offshore on the second day until late. The wind gods came through again however!

Tom Leeman just put up a video on the event ...
