Greek tourist drowns while kiteboarding off Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico: A tourist from Greece was killed in a kiteboarding accident off Puerto Rico's northern coast, officials said.

Dominica L. Parakera, 29, apparently became tangled in his equipment Saturday in the Atlantic Ocean and was trapped by his board beneath the water, according to police Agent Harry Muniz.

Parakera was taken to a hospital in the city of Aguadilla and later pronounced dead, Muniz said

I have been in communication with a close friend of Dominica back in Europe. The following appears in Kiteforum:

The newspaper accounts have some serious errors in them. Dominica was an experienced kiter and no board leash was in use. She may have lost consciousness as Soleas describes in his post.*

I wish her young son and mother both receive the emotional and financial support they will need to get through this traumatic time of loss. Again, my sincere regrets go out to her family and friends.

* We are all sad here in Cyprus for this tragic loss.
Dominica, a Polish girl living in Cyprus, was a close friend and a very sweet girl who also left behind an 8 year old son.

I'm not sure exactly how it happened. The story I heard was she got tired while in the water and shouted for help and by the time she was brought into land she was already passed out and later died in hospital.

She went on holiday in Puerto Rico with a bunch of friends ( all close friends of mine ). It happened on saturday and the autopsy will be tomorrow to find out the causes of her death.

I am not sure where the Greek tie in comes from as Dominica was from Poland and resident of Cyprus.
