Matanzas Blowout - November 28, 2002

Kiting was just getting started in Florida in the early 2000's. First time events were starting to pop up around the state organized by local leaders in the sport. Here is a great one from Northeast Florida, the "Matanzas Blowout" organized by Daryl Drown of Ocean Extreme Kites. The images from the original posting on kiteforum and the FKA list on yahoo groups were lost over the years. So, the post has been recreated here with the original photos.

"In the category of better late than never, the following is a summary of the Matanzas Blowout kiteboarding event held a while ago in Northeast Florida in the USA.

THE GUYS

Lots of kiteboarders consider traveling to Florida and wonder about riding locations and conditions. It is a large state with over a 1000 miles of coastline to choose from with a wide variety of conditions to choose from. The St. Augustine area offers some great conditions both on the water as well as shore side for visitors. The beaches are wide with lower quantities of beachgoers than in some other more densely populated areas of the state. There are waves as well as some sheltered areas to ride.

MAP OF THE ST. AUGUSTINE AREA

Daryl Drown of Ocean Extreme Kites (http://www.oceanextremesports.com/) organized the Matanzas Blowout. Daryl is a friendly, very knowledgeable kiteboarder, retailer and FKA area coordinator for the St. Augustine area.

DARYL HOPS A RIDE

Daryl did an extended stint in the mountains in skiing and snowboarding competition and instruction before he came to Florida to launch the shop. He has been into traction kiting for over ten years giving him a lot of useful experience.

PART OF THE SHOP

A fair quantity of pro and amateur kiteboarders, family and friends came down to the event. Conditions were a might nippy for Florida with early temps in the mid 40 F range. Unfortunately, the cold front that brought the drop in temps. didn't deliver on the promised strong winds. The folks at the event still had a good time playing with kite powered buggies, mountain boards and looking over new 2003 gear on display. Eddie Toy also of Ocean Extreme Kites even went into the water for a downwinder early on. Eddie is a not only a kiteboarding instructor but is also heavily into web design and video production. Looking forward to checking out the second "Get'n School'd" video to come out from Paul Menta courtesy of Eddie Toys ministrations. I suspect the rest of us were a bit reluctant to take on the chilly water without just a bit more wind to drive us on.

HAMISH AND ZACH GO TO IT

Part of the day was devoted to trying to install tennis balls into Andy Hurdman.

LINING UP THE PARTICLE ACCELERATOR TO WANG ONE AT ANDY HURDMAN

Hamish MacDonald launched his impressive 28 m prototype slingshot kite for traction kiting. He wiped out a few times at the start of buggying but in short order his kite genes took control and he was roller shredding like a champ, just like in kiteboarding. Young Zach of NW Florida was down with his family. Zach was also new to buggying but soon he was styling with skill. Kite control pays be it on the water or while rolling along the sand. Looking forward to seeing great things out of Zach in coming competitions.

HAMISH AND 28 M SLINGSHOT PROTOTYPE!

Kent Marinkovic of Cuba Crossing and Adventure Sports/Cabrinha fame was there along with Neil Hutchinson of the same crossing and kitesurfusa.com.

KENT MARINKOVIC STYLES

Champ rider, Dimitri Maramenides came down from Cape Hatteras to join in on the fun. I have to say that something about the St. Augustine shoreside strongly reminds me of the Outer Banks of Cape Hatteras. Brad Lange came up from Islamorada to have at it as well. Next time, just add wind! Lots of other prominent businesses such as Hana Crew and kiteboarders from the Florida scene and beyond were there as well.

NEAL HUTCHISON AND HIS BABY ... KITE HEARSE?

Bucky, Peter Nordby's partner was visiting from Texas. An auction and raffle were organized with proceeds going to the family of recently deceased Peter Nordby of Corpus Christy. Peter was very well regarded by many people and will be sorely missed.

ONE MORE PERSON BRAVES THE WATER (EVER FEEL LIKE THAT LITTLE DOG?)

So, it was a good, if not a bit nippy first visit to St. Augustine for me. It is an intriguing area and I look forward to returning soon. Florida does have a lot of varied riding areas for kiteboardings. Stay tuned, next will be a summary of the Keys Blowout that was organized by Brad Lange of Extreme Sports Florida Keys.
