The Whale is about 30' long and unfortunately has a couple lines and cork floats tangled around his tail which is probably why it's resting in the harbor.

Chuck added the following on his Facebook page:

"So stoked that the marine mammal specialists from sea world finally cut all the tangeled neting and lines off of the whales's tail and fins. The whale is happy and heading up the coast as we speak. I love happy endings."

More about the assist:

"SeaWorld helps untangle whale off Dana Point

Rescuers try to untangle a rope wrapped around a whale in Dana Point Harbor on Wednesday, May 12, 2010.

A Sea World whale disentanglement team is trying to remove long ropes seen dangling from a gray whale that has been swimming near Dana Point harbor.

A California gray whale — entangled in a straitjacket of rope and netting — was freed Wednesday off Dana Point during an often tense, two-hour rescue operation aided by mammal experts from SeaWorld.

http://media.signonsandiego.com/img/photos/2010/05/12/whale-rescue_t352.jpg?980751187beea6fc26a3a9e93795d379f5 8af1c4

Onshore onlookers cheered after a multiagency team cut the whale loose from more than 100 pounds of rope and fishing net that had prevented it from swimming out of a narrow harbor passage.

The whale, believed to be an 18- to 20-foot-long calf, was later spotted in the open sea. Witnesses said it appeared to be heading north, in sync with springtime migratory patterns."

Went by the beach in Deerfield to checkout the convergence of squalls from land and sea last night. There was a guy doing standup in this dramatic setting. Even better he wasn't struck by lightening. I didn't have a regular camera just an an Evo cellphone,

That squall to seaward became real interesting and threatening as it moved in to shore. It seemed to change every few seconds.

I tried to capture it with limited success but at one point there were these dark ragged vertical tendrils of cloud hanging down below the base. This thing morphed through many changes of mood short of grabbing and swallowing vessels at sea.

"RRD-NISSAN Surfin' Venice

This is an event that aims to bring at least 100 SUP boards to paddle in the historic waters of the canals of Venice and it has the objective to become a fixed annual Meeting of the SUP movement in Italy and all around the world.

Try to imagine 100 SUP departing from Piazzale Tronchetto and paddling along the Grand Canal, accompanied by the crews of the Venetian rowing on historical boats, among a bustle of gondolas, boats and TAXI motor-boats of various kinds."

Used to have a lot of human waste and industrial pollution in Venice Lagoon along with heavy metals, even dioxin in the sediments. Have things changed? Sure hope so.

Makes you wonder, do killer whales like surfers, especially all wrapped up in black neoprene like seal sashimi on a float? If you stare at the dorsal fin long enough it may turn into something else? Images from Robert Smallwood at Dee Why in Australia.

It isn't standup but more tow-in. The things that make it novel include it was at night and at Jaws in Maui, HI.

"Surfer becomes first to ride giant 'Jaws' waves at night
By: Pete Thomas, GrindTV.com

Night surfing is eerie even in small waves, so imagine the sensation of careening down sheer and heaving faces measuring 30 feet, atop a black ocean, at a Hawaiian reef break so notoriously it's called Jaws.

Australian big-wave surfer Mark Visser, using specially engineered LED lighting built into his buoyancy vest and board, became the first to night surf at Jaws off Maui, during an admittedly scary and ultra-surreal session at about 2 a.m. Thursday.

Visser, 28, was towed onto the waves via jet-powered watercraft, as all surfers are during big winter swells at Jaws, because the swells travel too swiftly to be caught by paddling. "

"The Surfboard That Changed A Papua New Guinea Village

by steve casimiro on May 11, 2011 · 0 comments
no responses

It sounds like something from a post World War II cargo cult: Three decades ago, an Australian pilot leaves a surfboard in a remote village in Papua New Guinea called Vanimo. The village, which lacks rudimentary facilities like electricity or running water, becomes surf crazy. Fast forward to today, when Papua New Guinea is holding it first national championship, with the winner being given the opportunity to travel to Australia and train with professional surfers."

Last week I made a 3 hour drive with a friend to get some waves on the east coast. Our first stop was Playa Linda on Cape Canaveral. I am proud to say that I am the last soul to have SUP surfed in front of the space shuttle Endeavor. This is the legend of the last cosmo SUP surfer and I'm sticking to it! Playa Linda closes a few days before any launch and we were able to squeeze in a session before it closed for the Endeavor's last lift-off early Monday morning.

As I was surfing I couldn't help but think of how cool it is to surf in front of a live space shuttle getting ready to launch into orbit only a few days later. I'm pretty sure there is nowhere else on this planet that this can be done. However, I would not doubt that somewhere on another planet an intelligent being is surfing star-dusted barreling waves on his surfing space ship. I'll be sure to share more of my intergalactic surf fantasy another time. For now, check out the video of my rocket fueled east coast surf trip!

Mike Douglas and Cody Townsend pose with their riding gear fresh from the mountains to Maui.

Checkout the video, these guys go FAST and real parallel to the wave crest. The tow in with a waverunner of course but once they get going, they go!

“A year in the making, Mike Douglas and Cody Townsend fulfill a dream of towing into big waves on skis in Hawaii. After 4 weeks, 5 broken skis, and 1 big scare, they proved that it is, in fact, possible. Is it cool, or is there a future for skiing on waves? Decide for yourself.”

"Mike Douglas and Cody Townsend: The Pro Skiers
Mike Douglas produces a TV series called “Salomon Freeski TV” that covers every part of the freeskiing world, including wave skiing. Douglas and fellow skier Cody Townsend set off on a journey to Hawaii after asking themselves the same question many pro-skiers who surf have: I wonder if you can ski on a wave? Townsend said the idea came to him while he was checking the waves in Santa Cruz, California. “It suddenly occurred to me that a wave had a similar steepness to a lot of the runs up at Squaw. From that moment on I knew that it would one day be possible to ski on a wave,” he said. The duo tried out a few different ski-binding setups before the trip, including water skis and trick skis, and eventually decided for safety reasons that downhill bindings were the best choice because they were able to get their skis off in the water most easily through the familiar system. “We determined through testing on the lakes that the only boot and binding system that we could get off every time was alpine boots and bindings,” Douglas said. In Hawaii they hit waves by getting towed in on jet skis, and also used the wind to give kite-skiing a try."

Wind drives us, water too. Sometimes waves come from afar traveling to an area of calm or even opposing breeze. This is what happened off Santa Barbara recently. Thanks to Blueline for the great images.

That is some impact and only on the near vertical face of the wave. The real fun is yet to come.

"Photographers Nicholas Routzen and Emiliano Gatica were tasked with capturing the sensuality of the Miss reef and the true essence of Puerto Rico. Latin beauties mingling with exotic locations like Isabela, Aguadilla, Rincon , the waterfalls at San Sebastian, the caves in Arecibo and Viejo San Juan created an awe- inspiring backdrop to create some truly memorable imagery. This year The Miss Reef Calendar is a coffee table book that contains 52 pages"

Ok, so the videographer/editor have a strong butt fixation. You have to admit they did some creative work in contrast, texture and motion insetting stray parts of anatomy. Things like hair, hands, etc., not just bottoms. They did this while exploring PR, apparently Reef is going to feature Latin America over the next few years in their calendars.

When Legoman wants to shred, that's what he does.

"The product of a rainy day here in the UK, dreaming of surfing somewhere warm. This Lego man adventure is a short stop motion clip of a lego man getting barrelled, busting airs and surfing a right hand towel reef that was breaking in the corner of my bathroom.

Thanks to everyone who helped make it, big ups to Jack and his broken leg!

The first of a ton of shots to come out of the cooker from yesterday's first annual running of the Virginia (Tur)Key Rounding. Here is a train on the far side of Virginia Key with Fisher Island in the background led by the Admiral on a stock board drafting Mini, Mary, Helga and a mystery rider hidden in the back. Jim Desilva graciously gave both myself and my daughter BG a ride to shoot photos of the action. More to come!
