Hey Paul,

What sort of wind and waves do you get there? Are there typical wind patterns if so what do they consist of? Do you still have new kite gear available sparing folks the need to travel with boards or even kites if they want to? Also, how is underwater viz. there?

Rick, the wind comes from the humboldt current, which makes wind everyday [just about from june-november. The nice thing is that in Ecuador its warm, as it is colder down south that time of year. Waves are 2 meter to 4 meter, lots of long lefts and fun rights, with some real big suprises we dicovered at the end of the season last year.

People are so friendly and its a fun place, mainly Ecuadorian toursits, so they like to see us gringos kiting. The fisherman you see is where we get the weather reports from.....why? That guy goes out like 20 miles with the early offshore winds into the current, loads up on fish and waits for the switch and heads back in, no motor....so its safe to safe they are dialed in.

The cool thing about ecuador is that you can travel about after kiting and see really unique stuff and not miss any water time.....oh yeah and its cheap...no visa...ect

Anyway, fun to be had, a new place for us light winders looking for a fix june- october

I know the Humbolt runs cold, so between that and heating arid lands inland you have a reliable daily thermal or sea breeze wind cycle? What do they call the offshore and onshore winds there? I think in Jamaica they call the offshore, lighter nightly component, the "undertakers wind." What are the air and water temperatures like where you are and what do you wear in the water as a rule? Any interesting archaeological sites in the area?


Also, any grass standup boarders in your parts or is that more to the south?

Yes, the humboldt creates this wind every day, usally 9 meter or 11m.

I gernerally wear a top and board shorts. Nights are cooler, like 70....feels like what the a/c is set to my house on in the summer in key west,so its a nice break. Day time normally 80, no humidity. If i surf or sup normally a shorty.

Cool boards you showed, lots of guys use balsa wood tied together like rafts.

Sometimes i fly in through quito and check out the area there for a day. There are so many trips here,it is endless. Put it this way, i will evenspend 2 weeks kiting volcanos.....lol name your adventure!

Kiting volcanos? Have any photos of the terrain? Sounds like Mount Arenal hopefully without the gusty, nuking winds.
