CABRINHA WINNERS!

After 10 nights of racing, the prestigious 2008 Cabrinha Race Series has concluded with some familar faces on the podium:

Anthony Chavez (Naish), First
Chip Wasson (Ozone), Second
Jeff Kafka (Cabrinha), Third

As a result of Wasson’s strong finish over the last four nights of racing((all firsts and seconds overall) he came from a strong third to tie Kafka for second; and based on the tie breaker scheme he is awarded second.

Anthony Chavez led wire to wire capturing the 2008 champions crown. He is also the 2006 Cabrinha Race Series Champ and the 2007 US National Champ. Wasson was also on the podium in 2007 and third at the US Nationals Masters. Jeff Kafka is the 2007 Cabrinha Race Series Champ and finished second in the 2007 US Nationals. At the 2008 LA Ventana Classic the three also stood on the podium together with Kafka first, Wasson, second and Chavez third.

Providing stiff competition to the leaders in 2008 were Geoff Headington (SS), fourth, and John Gomes (Cabrinha) fifth. They were followed by Frank Wittke (Fone) who nosed out Eric Due (Cabrinha) by one point for sixth. Rounding out the top ten were Chris Brown (OR) who was third in 2007, Stefaans Viljoen (OR) and Marcello Segura (RRD).

The 2008 version of the Cabrinha Race Series was a hugh success having 60 plus different racers compete with 30 racers competing for the series top honors. The series also became the ultimate proving ground for the development of raceboards. Chavez tested out four different boards ending up on a stick made by LMG. Wasson tested out three different designs before settling on a design from Mike Zajicek, world renowned windsurfing formula board designer, while Jeff Kafka rode his own Neptune Prisoner of Wind designs. Ken Winner and Sky raced, putting the final touches on the North Ltd, while WindyDevil introduced their race version shaped by John Amundson. Nils Stolzlechner of NJS Design flew to S.F. from Corpus to test out his latest version while Headington and Gomes rode the NJS Design for fourth and fifth. Where as most of the shapes have a similar planform, rocker lines and fins, including number, type, size and placement varied more significantly. http://home.comcast.net/~rareposter/CRS8_4.jpg

The Cabrinha Race Series is also broken into three “Mini Series. Chavez was the winner of the first, Kafka the second and Wasson the third. Kafka was the only one to be on the podium in all three mini series.

On a technical note, there were two protests that were not heard by the protest committee as the outcome was not material to the final ranking. The first was a protest involving a racer who was in the water body dragging back to his board on port while two racers on starboard thought they had rights and were fouled. The basic rule is that a racer who is not on the board is considered a “capsized” boat and all others must avoid. The other protest involved a racer (#1) whose kite was hit by another racer’s kite (#2) causing the kite of racer #1 to hit a third racer’s kite who then hit a fourth racers kite. Racer #1 did not see who originally hit his kite causing the change reaction. Racer #1 was protested by #3 and #4. Although racer #1 didn’t see who hit his kite he filed a protest…especially as he had a witness. His witness saw the incident but also couldn’t identify racer #2. My personal view is that the first protest would have been in favor of the capsized racer, and the second protest would have been in favor or racers #1, #3 and #4 who would have also received redress.
