I'll be in Ft Lauderdale this week, and am interested in Kiting on Friday. I have 3 years experience and a swimsuit. I need equipment for the day.

It looks like there'll be a storm in the area, so it promises to be some good kiting (appropriate caution, of course).

If you can help me with a complete rig, please post here!

Your friendly airline/fighter pilot,

Your friendly airline/fighter pilot,

I would have a hard look at the weather radar before rigging on Friday. The forecast appears below:

.THURSDAY NIGHT...NORTHWEST WINDS 50 TO 55 KNOTS BECOMING SOUTH
55 TO 60 KNOTS AFTER MIDNIGHT. GUSTS IN EXCESS OF HURRICANE FORCE POSSIBLE.
SEAS INCREASING TO 13 TO 15 FEET BUILDING TO 14 TO 17 FEET AFTER
MIDNIGHT. INTRACOASTAL WATERS EXTREMELY ROUGH. OCCASIONAL SQUALLS AND
THUNDERSTORMS.
.FRIDAY...SOUTH WINDS 45 TO 50 KNOTS WITH GUSTS IN EXCESS OF
HURRICANE FORCE POSSIBLE DECREASING TO 35 TO 40 KNOTS WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. SEAS 14 TO 17 FEET SLOWLY SUBSIDING TO 11 TO 14 FEET IN THE
AFTERNOON. INTRACOASTAL WATERS EXTREMELY ROUGH. OCCASIONAL SQUALLS AND
THUNDERSTORMS.

Taking a kite out in those conditions, high winds, high gusts, lightening, etc. would better be described as EUTHANASIA than kiteboarding!

If there is a large enough hole between feeder bands on Saturday and if the winds are sane you could consider going out. Otherwise, repeating history isn't always a lot of fun more here (http://fksa.org/viewtopic.php?t=210). Saturday may be more doable, who knows?

Matt Cohen ( 561-254-1441 ) could set you up in Deerfield to Delray as he is a Cabrinha rep. The guys at Best in Delray might also be able to help you out. You could ask Chuck at delraywatersports.com if he has a rig available. He may be able to help you with a board, maybe not kites however. Damien with http://www.eastcoastkiteboarding.com in Dania may be able to set you up as well.

Good luck and watchout for squalls. You never know what kind of wind one will deliver until you're in it.

Problems? Problems?

The only problems I have are rips on my hands due to lack of recent kitesurfing. Katrina gave us very up and down conditions today with winds gusty as well as variable. I came off the water being overpowered on my Airush Lift Pro 11.5, which de-powers a lot, to re-rigging that same kite after a break.

Here in Panama City, we were all rusty and out of shape. Other than that, it was really a good time.
