Hook Knives

All this time to think about kiting with no wind i've gotten around to looking for a good knife. My harness didn't come with one and i'm not sure it even has a place for it. I've been looking at alot of hook knives but i'm wondering if they will really do the trick when the time comes. I'd like any ones opinion on knives while kitesurfing. Is the hook Knife the best option? Wheres the best place to have it? Should i use a regular knife in a harness around my leg like rambo?

I have a Dakine hook knife. Comes in a little pouch that is velcroed shut. The knife itself has a white tab on it so you can easily identify it, and pulls nicely from the pouch. The pouch itself has belt-type loops on the back and I mounted mine on the straps between the hook and the harness, so it's right in front if you ever need it.

Hook knives are good, particularly if you mount them in a place which you can reach easily. However you attach it you need some assurance that it will break away if caught by a kite line without excessive force.** Securing with weak pull ties is one approach. I wear mine on my right seat harness leg strap. Other folks prefer serrated knives to better tackle leader lines. Some carry both as there have been some cases of kiters being tied up and having just one arm free to cut out of things. Also, it is easy to drop these knives in an emergency or not, as well.

** This fellow used a "soft" carabiner to attach his knife. It captured some kite line, the kite relaunched and looped him along at speed for a good distance until a panel tore in his kite depowering it. It could have just as easily dragged him on to shore under different circumstances.

My harness does not have a place for a knife, is that what those pouches are there for, Or would i have to sew it on myself?

The person i took lessons from carried a regular 1 1/2 inch knife in a rope that had a holder on the harness. Is this a good idea?

I'm ganna go with the dakine. I can just attach it where i think is safe right? I cant think of any places that would be to dangerous.
