Afternoon all!

I am coming down for a week vacation to visit my folks on Pine Island. I haven't been able to find much info about whether this is a kiteable spot or not. I am trying to decide if I should bring my gear along with me!

Any suggestions?

Rule #1 : never leave home without your kite gear...especially if you'll be in FL for a week!!!

The closets I've ridden to Pine Island is Sanibel, which can be great.

I've been out to Pine Island a few times (Matalacha, Bookelia) and it looks like lots of possibilities there.

If you can get a boat over to Captiva or Punta Blanca Island you can probably hit some incredible shallow water, flat water riding in every wind direction.

You may not encounter a lot of other kiters out there, it's pretty remote from the popular spots, but it could be epic. depending on where you are on Pine Island, Sanibel could be a good hike.

enjoy your trip...Pine Island is a cool place!

PS...is that "Southie" as in S. Boston?

My folks are on the water on Pine Island, but they have been telling me there are a tons of real shard oyster beds, so I was a bit nervous about that. I was hoping for a few trips out to Sanibel/Captiva, but it's a bad drive with traffic from what I heard.

I will try and bring my gear and see what happens: better to have it and not use it than to not bring it and wish you had.

Southie as in South Boston. Know the area?

Southie as in South Boston. Know the area?

yep, schooled/lived/worked in Boston for many years, did a lot of windsurfing at Pleasure Bay, and on the Cape/Islands between 81 and 90

If you have time you should visit the St. Pete area, some nice spots here and in any wind direction you can ride somewhere. It's probably 2 hrs drive (?)

PS If you have some booties and are an experieced rider the shells shouldn't be too much of a problem, just watch out at low tide and don't shred your kite to ribbons.
