2007 Causeway to Causeway 22 Mile Paddle Challenge
So far we have received 11 responses from paddlers interested in the 22 Mile Paddle Challenge, so we have gone ahead with its planning. We have moved the date to Saturday, October 20th. In the case of bad weather, the alternate date is Sunday October 21.

Sign-up will start at 7AM and we will start promptly at 8 AM. The entry fee is $10. The challenge will start at Lee Wenner Park in Cocoa at the base of the SR 520 Causeway bridge. The course will parallel the InterCoastal Waterway in the Indian River and continue south for 11 miles to the bridge at the Pineda Causeway (SR 519). Turn around will be just prior to the bridge at a Manatee No Wake Zone sign which will also be marked with a buoy.

There will be a maximum of 4 hours for paddlers to reach the turn around point. Any paddlers not meeting the 4 hours will exit the water at POW-MIA Park adjacent to the turn around. Also, any paddler who wishes to, can leave the course at that point. Any one exiting here will be provided a ride back to Lee Wenner Park..

An escort boat will follow the paddlers and there will be a lifeguard on a jet ski to escort stragglers to the finish line.

Paddlers are required to have a minimum of 20 ounces of hydration and more is recommended. Also reef shoes are recommended for water entry and exit. Each paddler will be provided with a whistle to use in case of emergency.

A week prior to the challenge we will e-mail you asking for a confirmation of your attendance. If we have less than 6 entrants at that point we will cancel the challenge. We are getting very excited about holding this challenge. It will be a lot of fun and a will be a true long distance challenge for every one. We will be sending more updates as the date gets closer.

Just received this update:

Hello Paddlers,

We are making steady progress putting together the 22 mile challenge on October 20. We have had several inquiries from SUPers wishing to participate. Because of this we will be making sure that we have someone available at the 11 mile turnaround point to shuttle paddlers who wish to do just the 11 mile leg. This is due to the fact that if the wind comes up too much, the SUPers may not be able to paddle the upwind leg. We may not be able to get you back right away but there will be water and shade to rest up until then.

There is a shuttle flight scheduled for the 23rd, so we recommend that those who plan to make hotel reservations do so as soon as possible. We have contacted the Luna Sea motel in Cocoa Beach. They have offered a rate of $59/night which includes breakfast at Roberto’s Little Havana Restuarant or Sunshine Diner. Rooms are limited, so if you want to stay there call soon.

There is plenty to do in Cocoa Village if you wish to bring your family. There are numerous restaurants and stores. There is an arts & crafts fair in Cocoa Village that weekend. There are also several drinking establishments for that after race beer.

We would like to point out this event is a function of the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame Museum. We hope to make this an annual event to complement our other fund raising paddle events, the 7 mile Florida State Paddleboard Championships and 3 mile Waterman's Challenge.

Mr. Cubano’s Restaurant will be catering. They are providing black beans and white rice, roast pork, picadillo, tostones/maduros, cuban bread and a couple of cases of Havana Cola. Those participating in the challenge can eat for free, family members can eat for a $5 donation to the museum. In order to have enough food, please provide the total number of participants and family members you will have. We need to have these numbers no later than Friday, October 12.

IMPORTANT: Please send all correspondence concerning this event to:
eastcoastpaddleboard@yahoo.com

This will be a great event,
thanks,

John Hughes/Kim Kelly
