I have 3 27m lines an 1 28m line, so I need to shorten the 28m line to 27m. What is the easiest and safest way to do this?

Stupid question but it is a waste to get rid of 3 good lines or does someone have 1 used 27m line they want to sell?

Knoting spectra is generally not a good idea due to the significant reduction in strength. The rule of thumb is that if you have a knot in a kite line that you can't remove, throw out the line. Sleaving is indicated unless you are using Q line. One approach to sleaving appears at:

http://www.kites.org/kitefantastic/dict/howto_sleeve.htm

What I have done in the past is to use a thin piece of copper wire instead of a needle to pull the kite line through the sleaving. You fold the copper wire in half forming a narrow loop at one end which you stick through the sleaving. You then thread the kite line through the loop and pull it back through the sleave. I have never tied sleaved line as shown in the link above. I have sewn the sleave in place as you see in manufactured loops on traction kite line. You can buy sleaving at many online traction kite stores.

All this is a pain in the butt of course. That is why I shifted to using Q line for my replacement lines years ago.

Does notting Q-line cause instability in strength? if so, how do you set them up?

I used to sleave Q line years ago but stopped and have had no loss in performance. I normally tie a figure 8 knot or even an overhand knot* and have yet to have one break unless it is about to go through wear. Q line over time will show some tiny transverse hairline cracks in the outer sheathing. If you see that it is time to cut off the last 1 to 2 ft. of the line and retie your loops with undamaged line.

I normally buy 500 ft. rolls of the stuff for around $110. USD and it lasts for quite a while as replacement line for factory supplied bars/lines and for extensions.
