Great morning for practicing tricks :)
It was solid 12 to 15 earlier for Donna, then it filled to solid 15 plus for me. We both rode the same kite.

The Donster did about 15 backrolls this morning all powered and landing riding away clean. She completed and sailed out smoothly on just her 3rd attempt (pretty sick). Her first attempt was classic. Perfect backroll with a (accidental) kiteloop. She learned how to redirect pretty fast after that one!!
I, in the meantime, did a ton of unhooked faceplants to finger sprains.

Tom, you are right, I better get ready to be outdone.

Nah Josh you were looking good, just not pulling what you wanted to pull. Still better than anyone else I saw riding out there, except E-Bone who did some crazy pink rainbows.

Plus Josh, now that you have a drivers license your progression will go ballistic.

Yeah, Josh, no bitching, I saw you throw and land some sick movez.

Funny thing about the rainbows, Tom. I was smacking some mini-lips at south Skyway yesterday and the angle of the sun was causing rainbows to appear in the spray off of the lip. That's a new mad skillz move that I call the Gay Pride. Here's a t-shirt to commemorate the trick:

Everyone is a punk bitch compared to the Bone in terms of wipeouts today. I left it all out on the water this morning. I decided that enough was enough after I did a cartoon wipeout in 10 to 12 inches of water. That hurt, pain followed by PAIN, and I am lucky I didn't get cut. Alex was concerned and rode right over to remind me that I am a fool.

E-Bone needs a bad ass theme song. You know, like Night Rider or Airwolf.

I'm thinking more like Tha A team theme song. The Bone can be Mr. E instead of Mr. T with the rap thing though. Maybe I pitty myself.....Shaka

Theme song? I'm thinking more along the lines of "Bite It You Scum" by GG Allin.

Yeah Donna was looking good. When I pulled up I thought it was Scott out there doing inverted back rolls, but then I saw Scott standing on the beach. Way to go Donna!

What the heck was that E-Bone, an affiliate id!?

Are you trying to cash in and make money on your little pink hello pony trademark?

Thanks Tom!
I was pretty pumped up! Definitely a sweet day for me!

Time to try a front roll
:D

Front rolls are easier if you learn from off of the opposite foot that you do backrolls from. So if you do back rolls with left foot forward, to front rolls with right foot forward... this way you are spinning the same direction for both.

They are easy.. dont forget to redirect with the opposite hand!

Every one is different on this stuff.
It's harder for me switch, too, Josh.

"Back in the day" most of us learned front rolls first, then backrolls. It was mainly because there were only a few of us, and Bill Carr was nailing fronts alot and we watched him and copied him.

I think fronts are easier because the redirect of the kite matches what your body is doing. However, it is a blind landing.
The backroll itself is easy, but it seems odd to direct the kite opposite of your rotation, hence the accidental kite loops I see over and over when people first start.
Either way, these are both fun.
I think Donna might get the front roll next time out. At that point, I will only have 1 more trick than her. Oh well. :D

ya.. the redirect of the kite is what threw me (litterally) at first.. now i just focus on the forward hand and ensure to only bring the kite back far enough to jump and then begin moving it forward.. timing is still hit and miss sometimes, but i can tell when I am about 1/2 way around if i am going to land it. i need to start trying double backs and fronts..

and start throwing a quick back or front in the middle of a big jump like i see a bunch of riders do..

screw the kiteloops.. ill work those out next season maybe.. got lots of variations on the rolls to dial in.

cool thing with bows is that when your in the air and realized you jumped to high and your going to over rotate, you have two options.... you can pull in the bar to slow your decent and rotate twice or what i mostly do is let the bar out some half way through the jump so i come down fast enough to only do one rotation...
i love bow kites

E-bone, your shirt made me think of wise words of the sage Jim Croce:

"You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger
And you don't mess around with Jim, da do da do..."

Yeah, I'll probably get some payback dealt my way for that one.

I hear you Josh, I suck at switch too... pretty bad.

BUT, I think that's why front rolls are easier switch... because you are used to weighting your (regular) back foot and turning your (regular) front shoulder away from the kite... these two things help make the switch front roll work... It's like a back roll going backwards :) After learning backrolls I landed front rolls on my first attempt switch. I still cannot do them the other way!

I suck so bad at them regular that I don't try them when people are around...it's just too embarassing.. I end up getting dragged 50 feet on my back.
