A video has just been released providing an overview on William Trubridge and his free diving activities in Dean's Blue Hole on
Long Island in the Bahamas. The video contains dramatic underwater and island views in the area of the blue hole along with nicely
edited scenes. The blue hole is a dramatic setting all by itself despite its great depth and dark reaches. The karst geology, white
sand and nearby deep blue ocean provide numerous intriguing contrasts. The video goes into Williams records and attempts, training,
philosophy and that of friends and family.

Dean's Blue Hole on the Southeastern coast of Long Island in the central Bahamas

Here is the plot summary provided on iTunes:

"Martin Khodabakhshian (9-Time Emmy Award-winning ESPN producer) directs and produces this fascinating documentary that
truly goes to new depths in the search for man's physical and mental limits. BREATHE follows New Zealander, William Trubridge
as he attempts to break his own world record in the extreme sport of Freediving. William attempts to dive completely unaided to a
depth of 300ft, almost to the bottom of the deepest blue hole in the world - "Dean's Blue Hole" in the Bahamas. Featuring candid
interviews with locals who live in fear of the hole, interviews with William's family members who are in constant fear for his
life and stunning underwater footage of William in action, BREATHE will literally leave you holding your own breath as William takes
us on a journey to the depths of mankind's fascination with the underwater world."

At one point William is asked "Why risk it?" (deep free diving descents). There was a prolonged silence and scene change with
the question left hanging. That is a better answer than some, where others in the past have waxed some poetic nonsense.
William also stated "Free diving is a sport where you try to go as deep as possible." I always thought there was a good deal
more to it than just that but different strokes, right? The blue hole is over 660 ft. deep, quite a bit deeper than what Martin
suggests in the plot summary above.

The video spends a good deal of time developing the local outlook on the blue hole speaking with a number of islanders in
the area. The video is intended not only to inform but also entertain and as such a bit of artistic license is used in some areas.
They uniformly don't go or swim there over concern of drowning, being sucked down or otherwise vanishing from the earth.
Well enough, the ironic reality of many in the Bahamas that despite their island existence many are not comfortable swimming.
The water poses real risk to the islanders in their daily lives particularly when not so far back many derived a living from the sea.

It is unfortunate that they didn't find locals who would describe reasons based in long standing Bahamian folklore and myth.
There is a whole pantheon of blue hole and grotto dwelling creatures more than willing to take out the odd interloper free diver or
islander alike. Sea duppies, lusca and the like, it would have added to the piece to include a narrative about these creatures.
There are a number of good works on the subject.

The video has any number of excellent views and scenes taken in the blue hole in excellent visibility. It isn't always that clear
there particularly in higher wind conditions as I learned last year. It does have a number of near uncomfortable tight shots which might
have been scripted or edited down a bit.

Regardless of the license and occasional inaccuracies, I recommend this video to divers, particularly free divers, folks with a love of
the islands and water in general. At $4.99 though iTunes it won't break the bank but will provide a close look at the free diver and this
unique blue hole in the out islands of the Bahamas.
