Our own Tonia Farman, organizer of numerous events to benefit cancer research over the years has earned well deserved recognition in winning "Self Magazine's" Women Doing Good award for 2012. She appeared on the Today Show this morning to discuss what she does and why. She works to eradicate this disease through "Athletes For Cancer." (http://www.athletes4cancer.org) Tonia and her troops have organized many events over the years including mainstays, Kiteboarding 4 Cancer, Paddle 4 Cancer, and Boards of Hope.

"Life's gentle breezes and fierce storms, though, pushed her down those paths, which led Self magazine to select her for one of its annual Women Doing Good awards. The honor, according to a spokeswoman, is for "inspiring people who fill a need and make the world a better place."
The award, which she'll accept next month in New York, comes with a $10,000 prize -- a nice chunk of change for her fledgling nonprofit, Athletes for Cancer, based in Hood River. In Oregon and Hawaii, it operates adventure-sports camps designed to instill confidence and hope in cancer survivors age 15 to 39.
Farman co-founded the organization after her only sibling, Scott Farman, died at 19 from acute lymphocytic leukemia.
"We were 15 years apart, yet we had a lot in common," Farman says. Both found their passions, peace and healing in the outdoors.
Farman, 41, began discovering that peace, plus the power of mastering wind and waves, when she moved from Seattle to the Columbia River Gorge nine years ago to take a marketing job with a kiteboarding company.
She didn't sail, windsurf or kiteboard. "
