CABRINHA RACE SERIES: Half Way
We’ve reached the half way point in this, the 7th season of the Cabrinha Race Series.
A bit of a lite turnout for this 6th night (makeup) of racing with only 30 competitors. Johnny Heineken had an injured foot, Geoff Headington was a no show (maybe the end of the quarter and the bank wasn’t making enough money), Adam Vance missed the first race (Maybe arrived late from Seattle?), and Andrew Koch were notable no shows.

Most everyone was on 9s with a few 11s, including Bryan Lake. Winds at Anita were 17-28 for the first two races and 16-26 for the third with some holes and some pretty good gusts.
Racing tonight was pretty much a two man show between Bryan Lake (currently ranked #1 in the PKRA World Tour) and Adam Koch, 2010 World Champ and runner up in 2011). When all was said and done, Bryan was undefeated for the evening (1,1,1) with Adam a close second, especially in the 2nd and 3rd races (2,2,2).

The first race saw about seven racers start on port. Which was actually favored. Although the port racers did not get a very good start, they were all late, they all cleared the starboard starters. Lake was first to tack to the windward lay line and was first around the mark and took a middle line downwind. At the committee boat, about half way between the windward mark and the leeward gate, Bryan had a 15 second lead over Adam followed by Wasson, Erika Heineken, and Stefano Rista. All riders took the outside line thru the leeward gate. Adam tacked first as it didn’t appear he was going to overtake Bryan. Bryan tacked to cover. Adam then had to take an extra tack and fell, loosing more time to Lake. Lake completed the course 27 seconds ahead of Adam and 57 seconds over Wasson who raced a strong race but was outclassed by Lake and Koch. Stefaans was fourth with Erika fifth.

The second race was similar to the first but this time about ½ the fleet started on port with Bryan and Adam in the lead. Going to windward it appeared Adam was pointing higher than Bryan with Bryan sailing faster. Bryan tacked first to the lay line and was ahead of Adam and rounded the windward mark 7 seconds ahead. Bryan put his kite in the water just after rounding the mark providing Adam an opening which he took full advantage passing Lake. However, by the time they reached the committee boat, Bryan had caught Adam and took a 6 second lead at the leeward gate. For the next two windward legs the two raced neck and neck, when it was over, it was Bryan by three seconds over Adam and 40 seconds over Wasson who was just ahead of Vance with Ty Reed.

In the last race of the evening, over half the fleet started on port. Again it was Lake and Koch taking an early lead, but this time, Lake seemed to be outpointing Koch. Lake was the first to tack to the lay line with both Lake and Koch board to board at the windward mark. Both took as outside line downwind and it was Lake by 6 seconds at the committee boat and 57 seconds over Wasson and Vance who were also racing side by side. On the downwind leg, it seemed that Lake’s line was interrupted by the Yellow and White Ferry. At the gate it was Lake by 4 seconds over Koch. They tacked to the lay line together and it was Lake by 5 seconds over Koch at the end and 1:07 over Wasson who was just ahead of Vance and Stefano Rista.

Overall, for the night it was Lake, Koch, Wasson (3,3,3) , Rista (6,6,5), and Stefaans Viljoen (4,7,9)
OF NOTE: Bryan Lake had just returned from Venezuela where he dominated the PKRA event with 10 of 12 firsts
Erika Heineken was 5th in the first race and 7th overall (5,12,7)
William Morris looked strong all night with a 6th overall (8,8,6)
Adam Vance had a 4th in both the 2nd and 3rd races…but missed the first race?
And we had a special quest racer of US Open (Olympic Club) Golf fame.
