2012 CABRINHA RACE SERIES IN FULL SWING

Season Seven is in full swing and bigger than ever; we have 43 riders signed up to race the season. And all three of our long time sponsors are back again: Cabrinha, Ozone Travel, and Captain Kirk’s.
Todd Greaux of Pryde Grp Americas/Cabrinha told me that he’s "very pleased that he took a chance seven years ago to sponsor this new format called kiteboard course racing.” “The Cabrinha Race Series has not only established it’s self as the epicenter of kite racing, it was at the forefront of the establishment of kiteboarding as a recognized sailing fleet in the USA as well as the world….and eventually an Olympic participant in 2016.” Karen Beber of Ozone Travel and Kirk Robinson of Captain Kirk’s both agree, saying “ We are very proud to have played a very special part in the growth of kiteboard racing; from an experiment to an Olympic sport…partnering with Cabrinha and the STFYC has been a privilege.”

Back to the racing….Johnny and Adam were ready to go on June 7 and again for a make up night on June 8. Bernie was off developing a new training routine; fishing with a pretty women, in preparation for the PKRA Venezuela.

All three races were pretty similar. Riders were on 7s and 9s with winds averaging 24-25with gusts 28-32. It was Johnny and Adam at each of the marks creating a gap with the next pack of Wasson, Headington, and Andrew Koch. Johnny topped Adam by 15-25 seconds in each of the three races. At the end of the night it was Johnny (1,1,1), Adam (2,2,2), Wasson (4,3,3), Headington (3,4,6), and Andrew Koch (5,6,5).

The following night, June 8, was a make up night. Wind averaged 19-24 with gusts to 28-30, but lulls were as low as 14. Racers were on 9s and 11s. The first race saw a general recall as so many racers were over early. (note the Cabrinha class flag is still up meaning the gun has yet to go off) Then there was a second recall as the committee boat was also starting the Friday night windsurf formulae series and there were so many gun blasts going off that only approximately half of the kite racers were on the start line at the gun. Racing looked similar to the night before with Heineken and Koch separating them selves from the next group. However the next group tonight was made up of Wasson, Ty Reed, and Adam Vance. Heineken topped Adam by 12-21 seconds in each of the three races. Race three was a bit different with Johnny and Adam separating themselves from the rest of the fleet by almost 2 min, but then only 5 seconds separated positions 3,4, 5,6,7. At the end of the night, it was Heineken (1,1,1), Adam (2,2,2), Wasson (3,4,4), Reed (6,3,3), Adam Vance (5,5,5).

Of Note: Wind speeds are at Anita which is usually less windy than out further on the race course.
Course layout for both nights included a start, windward, and a leeward gate; go between two buoys and then round either buoy to go upwind. Rounding the outside buoy will take you on an outside line, and rounding the inside buoy will take you on an inside line.
New comer Brian Kender from SoCal participated in his first Cabrinha Race Series…had to borrow my 7&9 XBs as he has nothing smaller than an 11m. He captured 8th overall each night (9,11,8). On Saturday he entered the Ronstan long distance race and grabbed the third spot on the podium with only two world champions ahead; Johnny and Adam.
Chris Brown was killing the starts, and Ty Reed showed off his best racing in recent memory.
Nils of NJS race boards and one of the pioneers at the Cabrinha Race Series was back in action raced respectfully.
Bryan (Bernie) Lake’s new training program (women and fishing) paid big dividends; he dominated the Venezuelan event by winning 10 of the 12 races and 2nd in the other two.
