Cabrinha Race Series: Great Racing
The eighth night of the 2011 Cabrinha Race Series (13 nights in total) saw winds averaging 21 (19-26) at Anita and basically the same at TI. Twenty-five racers made the journey to the start line pretty much on 9s. The field was a little light as Johnny Heineken, Adam Koch, and Bryan Lake were off in Puerto Rico for the North American Championships and Andrew Koch was off in Lake Garda for the Melges 32 World’s. Oh yeah, the American’s did a repeat of the World’s by once again owning the podium: Johnny Heineken 1st, Adam Koch 2nd and Damien Leroy 3rd…and Andrew was on top of the podium with Argo.

Events of the night are sketchy as I lost my notes, my memory is not what it used to be, I was distracted all night by a beautiful women next to me, and well, shit happened over the last 10 days…sorry.

Notes:
John Gomes had his kites stolen and was using a new replacement set. The significance being he used his bigger bar which was tuned to his big kites, but not the 9m he used for the night…he got good starts but his set up failed him all night on the course.
Eric Due got a new 69.5 board but used a borrowed set of fins…although he did OK in the first race he was not satisfied and went to the beach for his old 59.

All three races saw Wasson, Stefaans, Headington battle it out, with Brown, Due, Richards and von Tesmar close behind.
Chris Brown has been riding a larger version of his old board and has two consecutive nights of solid racing, while John von Tesmar, has moved from a modified JP windsurfing board to a new production model has also been a contender. Both will be in the mix going forward.

In the third race, Stefaans was the only racer to try a port start…it was a risky move as it was not favored. He was about a second late at the start, but had clear water and wind and just made it past the oncoming starboard fleet…the move put him in great position to challenge Wasson.

In the third race, Headington did not get a good start, so chose to go all the way inside…like almost to the beach while most of the fleet chose to tack over well outside of Anita. He missed the tack, but the move allowed him to make up a lot of ground...and was in the game at the windward mark. However, on the last starboard run to the finish, he fell twice within about 150 yards of the finish and had to do two extra tacks allowing two racers to pass him

Really good racing through out the fleet. What has developed is that groups of about 4-5 have formed within the fleet; from top to bottom. This makes for adrenaline pumping racing regardless of where you are in the fleet. As a result, the entire fleet continues to improve.
Wasson seemed to be sailing effortlessly, and although challenged at times, he finished the night with three bullets. Conditions must have seemed like child’s play after the World’s in Sylt Germany…sustained 25+knots winds with 10-15’ seas.
Overall for the evening, it was Wasson with 3 points (1,1,1), Stefaans with 7, (3,2,2), and Headington with 10 (2,3,5). They were followed by Brown with 13 (4,6,3), and Due with 16 (5,4,6).

For the women, we still have a two way battle for the top spot between Boriana and Erika, with this night going to Erika, followed by Boriana and then Sandy.
In the production fleet it was Due, followed by von Tesmar and Herscher.

The next race is tomorrow 7/28. This will mark the formation of the Silver Fleet. The Silver Fleet will be scored for the last five nights of racing and will enjoy one throw out. They will continue to also be scored in the Open/Gold Fleet and the women’s and production fleet as appropriate. Drop ins will only be scored in the Open fleet and women’s as appropriate.

This document is still under some revisions, but as it stands right now: Bret, Tom, Allen, William, Erika, Nick, Kevin G, Boriana, Tobin, Erin, Hugo, Amil, Bruce, Sandy, Eugenia, Shawn, Alex, Ariel, Felix, Dallas, Tim, and Lydia will be scored in the Silver Fleet…GOOD LUCK. Anyone who is listed and would prefer not to scored in the Silver Fleet, pls notify me and the race office. Anyone who believes they should be scored in the Silver fleet and is not listed, pls do the same.
